THE WORK AT THE FOUNDATION 

We are currently in an exciting period at the Mastercard Foundation as we intensify the implementation of the Young Africa Works strategy, aiming to empower 30 million young people throughout Africa to access dignified and fulfilling employment.

To ensure the Foundation's accessibility to our partners and program participants, we have established offices in Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Uganda. These offices provide strong in-country support for the implementation of Young Africa Works. We collaborate with governments, the private sector, educators, and other funders to enhance the quality of education and vocational training, equip young individuals with the necessary skills for the workforce, expand access to financial services for entrepreneurs and small businesses, and facilitate connections between job seekers and meaningful employment opportunities.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Head of Enterprise Data Management, the Data Engineer will build, maintain, and support data pipelines and storage solutions to deliver secure, reliable, and organized data for the Foundation, its Partners and Participants. You will play a key role in establishing new data capabilities for the Foundation and its Partners as part of a newly established Data and Analytics function. Collaborating with the wider Digital and Data Information Technology (DDIT) function, the Data Engineer will contribute to the Foundation’s recognition of its 2030 strategy by unlocking enhanced impact by providing data-driven insights.

The successful candidate will be located in one of our Africa offices (Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Rwanda).

WAYS YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE

  • Design and build systems and pipelines for ingesting, integrating, and analyzing data at scale across the Foundation. Support Data Scientists with cleaning, validating and enriching data to deliver high-quality data for analysis.
  • Design, develop and manage databases, data warehouses, and data lakes, leveraging best practice knowledge and prioritizing reliability, security and ease of use.
  • Design and implement data models to support system interoperability and BI and analytics requirements, working closely with Data Architects to develop and maintain architecture in accordance with core Data Architecture principles and Data Scientists to enable analytics use cases, ensuring efficient and reliable data flows across Foundation platforms. Support implementation of process automation where appropriate to drive efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the wider Data and Analytics team to drive ongoing improvement efforts to data pipelines and storage, fine tuning existing solutions to deliver advanced functionality and security for to the Foundation and its’ Partners and Participants while minimizing solution cost.
  • Collect and integrate data from diverse sources, across DDIT, the wider Foundation and its’ Partners.
  • Collaborate with the Data Governance team to ensure data engineering practices comply with relevant Foundation policies and frameworks.
  • Support the Data Governance and Processing team to provide regular reports on data system performance and data quality to key stakeholders within the DDIT and wider Foundation.
  • Maintain data management standards, promoting best practice ways of working related to data across the Foundation and its’ Partners to enhance data security and reliability.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 7 years’ experience in data engineering, ETL development, or a related role.
  • Comprehensive understanding of data pipeline development and data modeling principles.
  • Comfortable developing and maintaining data pipelines using programming languages like Python and SQL to extract, transform, and load data from various sources.
  • Familiarity/experience with cloud-based data warehousing and platform technologies (e.g. SQL server, Microsoft Azure DW/Data Lake, AWS Redshift, etc.) and their data services.
  • Comfortable working flexibly and taking on a range of responsibilities to support their team.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across a large, multi-cultural organization.
  • Familiarity with project management tools, Microsoft Office Suite, and collaboration platforms.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Foundation's equity, inclusion, and social impact values, with a passion for driving positive change and empowering underserved communities globally.
