AVP, Controller
At Mather—an award‑winning organization that is strongly financially positioned and recognized as a leader in wellness—our mission is to create Ways to Age Well for both residents and team members, and we’re seeking an AVP, Controller who is energized by meaningful work and ready to lead the financial backbone of a purpose‑driven organization. This is a full‑time, salaried, hybrid role, requiring three in‑person days per week at Mather Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, and is ideal for a seasoned finance leader with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting, is a CPA, and brings 7+ years of experience including public accounting, along with a thorough understanding of GAAP, strong accounting judgment, and familiarity with accounting systems and financial reporting tools. In this role, you’ll oversee internal and external financial reporting, audits, tax planning and compliance, payroll, treasury operations, and transaction accounting, while supervising and mentoring teams (minimum 2 years of people leadership experience) and communicating complex financial insights with clarity and confidence. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides timely, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) financial statements to internal and external customers including banks and revises and updates internal reports to be useful and efficient.
- Leads the annual GAAP financial (six legal entities) and 401(k) audits. Supports the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors as requested by the SVP Accounting & Treasurer.
- Manages the tax planning and compliance with all federal, state, and local corporate, payroll, sales, and other applicable taxes.
- Responsible for tax return preparation for Form 990 and 990T entities, partnership tax returns, and state tax returns.
- Oversees in-house bi-weekly payroll processing.
- Oversees implementation of effective controls for transaction accounting areas (general ledger, accounts payable cash receipts, payroll and fixed assets) to ensure accurate and efficient and timely processing.
- Enforces financial controls; development and maintenance of financial policies, procedures and Leader of organization wide Internal Control Plan.
- Assists with treasury operations, including cash and debt management, working capital, entrance fee collections/refunds for Life Plan Communities (LPC)’s, LPC distributions to ownership, cash flow management and reporting.
- Keeps organization apprised of all financial issues pertaining to company operations, including major Business Development and Capital Identifies and implements software enhancements to improve reporting and processing efficiency.
- Trains, supervises and mentors
- Establishes, operationalizes, engages team members in, and sustains a Quality Assurance Process Improvement process.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Required:
- Bachelors degree in Finance or Accounting with a CPA.
- Minimum of 7 years experience including public accounting experience.
- Minimum 2 years of supervising individuals.
- Extensive technical knowledge, thorough understanding of GAAP.
- Excellent communication skills – both written and oral.
- Advanced computer skills in accounting software.
The salary range for this position is a good faith estimate of the range Mather reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting. The actual wage paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to specific skills or certifications, years of experience, geographic location and market changes. Bonus Plan eligible ranging from 0-20% of base salary. The position is also eligible to participate in Mather benefit plans.
Salary Range
$180,000 - $205,000 USD
