Chief Engineer

The Mather (Tysons, VA)

Join our team as the Chief Engineer and play a key role in this life plan luxury community in Tysons, Virginia.  This building is LEED certified and is a smart building with multiple mechanical systems.  In this role, you will be responsible for building out the systems in preparation for opening and overseeing the annual LEED audit. You will ensure that all community areas and associated computerized, mechanized, and manual equipment and operating systems, as well as the campus grounds, are consistently maintained in excellent, safe, operational condition through timely preventive maintenance and proactive follow-up. 

This is a full-time salaried position. Weekend, weeknight, and holiday availability required. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain complete knowledge of fire system, heat, light, and power; seeks on-going efficiencies and best usage of energy, electricity, etc.; makes on-going recommendations for efficiencies, cost savings, and operational improvements.
  • Monitors ongoing PM program for equipment, buildings, public areas, operating systems. Ensures maintenance of buildings, equipment, and landscape. Maintains written standards of excellence for department performance and continually measures performance to meet or exceed standards.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of buildings, equipment, and landscape.
  • Conducts inspections, troubleshooting, and repair work for all areas of the property.
  • Maintains written standards of department performance expectations.
  • Regularly educates team members on preventive maintenance and equipment use.
  • Partners with the AVP, Building Services and Construction: 
    • cross train team members to build skill levels and competency within Facilities
    • counsels team members on work performance and recommends disciplinary actions as needed
    • makes assignments for work orders
    • holds team members accountable for departmental standards.
  • Ensures safety issues are addressed on a timely basis.
  • Coordinates and monitors work performed by outside contractors.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Manages timely completion of all resident and staff maintenance requests and work orders.
  • Oversees the scheduling of home renovations and vendor certification.
  • Coordinates work performed by outside contractors based upon the operational needs of the community.
  • Coordinates and conducts periodic fire drills and oversees regular testing of fire and life safety systems in accordance with regulatory requirements and company standards.
  • Provides expertise and assistance for all emergency repairs and complex system problems.
  • Maintains sufficient inventories of all necessary operating supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Educates team members on the importance of maintaining the physical asset, and how to safely and properly operate equipment.
  • Is a leader in achieving and maintaining LEED building certification.
  • Is a Mather ambassador in the local community.
  • Schedule and coordinate outside vendors/contractors
  • Maintains inventory of repair supplies.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Required:

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience working/managing in a high-tech engineering department
  • LEED/smart building experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • An up-to-date understanding of life safety codes
  • Practical knowledge of various trades, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, mechanical, air conditioning and refrigeration, kitchen equipment, boilers and chillers, and the overall mechanics of building operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to manage HR processes for the department (recruitment and selection, performance management, and lead dynamic daily stand-ups in the department)
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office); ability to work with spreadsheets, develop and maintain documents
  • Valid local driver’s license
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (English)
  • Outgoing and enthusiastic with a positive attitude; self-motivated and results oriented.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • High School Graduate
  • Trades license (electrical or HVAC preferred)
