Chief Financial Officer

Mountain View, CA

What MatX is Building

MatX's mission is to make the world’s best AI models run as efficiently as allowed by physics, bringing the world years ahead in AI quality and availability.

Your Place Here

MatX is looking for a world-class CFO to serve as a long-term executive partner to the founders as the business enters its most critical growth phase. This is not a purely operational finance role and it is not purely strategic. It is both, in equal measure.

You will build the finance function from the ground up while simultaneously managing multi-billion-dollar capital allocation, supporting the path to IPO, and working alongside founders on long-term strategy. The right person is as comfortable reviewing a debt term sheet as they are designing a month-end close process. You are a builder, a strategist, and an operator all at once. The right person will be:

  • Adaptable, not dogmatic. Not "this is how I've always done it" mentality.
  • Collaborative builder. People who craft processes with the team, not at the team.
  • Employee first in their mindset. Finance that serves the business, not the other way around.
  • Still in the doing. Senior enough to lead, but close enough to the detail to still get their hands dirty.
  • Built for pace. Comfortable with ambiguity, able to make decisions quickly and move.

What You’ll Do Here

Build and Lead the Finance function

  • Build and lead the finance organisation from its current early-stage infrastructure into a world-class function capable of supporting a public company.
  • Oversee and develop the Controller and FinOps teams, establishing robust systems, processes, and internal controls.
  • Establish accounting governance, financial reporting, and audit-readiness in line with the company's growth trajectory and IPO timeline.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders to embed financial discipline across the organisation without creating unnecessary friction for a fast-moving engineering culture.
  • Translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for non-financial leaders and the board.

Strategic Capital Allocation & Fundraising

  • Manage and optimise deployment of multi-billion dollar capital across supply chain investments, manufacturing partnerships, and factory production capacity.
  • Lead the Series C fundraise (>$1B target) and manage ongoing relationships with institutional investors including Jane Street and major AI-focused VCs.
  • Oversee the execution of the company's debt financing strategy — including the existing ~$2B debt-like facility — ensuring supply chain security and manufacturing readiness.
  • Work alongside founders to develop and execute long-term capital structure strategy aligned with the path to IPO.
  • Support customer prepayment arrangements and non-recurring engineering (NRE) revenue structures as commercial relationships develop.

Exit Readiness

  • Drive the business toward exit readiness targeting approximately 2029, including financial infrastructure, governance frameworks, and investor relations capability.
  • Support board and investor reporting requirements, including standing and ad hoc board discussions.
  • Advise founders on strategic exit considerations if acquisition opportunities arise from major technology players.
  • Ensure Jane Street and board-level involvement in senior finance hiring and strategic decisions is well managed and productive.

Who You Are

  • 15+ years of progressive finance experience including a track record of scaling finance functions in high-growth, capital-intensive businesses.
  • Hardware, semiconductor, manufacturing, or deep tech background with genuine understanding of supply chain economics, COGS, and manufacturing financial flows.
  • Proven experience raising very large institutional rounds and managing complex, multi-billion dollar capital structures.
  • IPO experience — either as CFO or a senior finance leader who has taken a company through the public markets process.
  • Banking or consulting background viewed positively — strong financial modelling and capital markets credentials
  • Exceptional intelligence and quantitative reasoning — able to engage credibly with world-class engineers using logic and data.
  • Intellectual honesty and humility — no ego, no politics, and genuinely collaborative.
  • Autonomous and self-directed — able to operate independently while maintaining close alignment with founders.
  • Aligned with a culture that prioritises speed over capital efficiency where appropriate — comfortable with ambiguity and pace.
  • Bay Area-based, or able to commit to approximately 3 days per week in the Bay Area office.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
