Corporate Controller

The Role:

The Corporate Controller plans, organizes, directs, and controls the Accounting and associated control functions of the company. Provides leadership and coordination of financial statement preparation, and financial reporting functions for the corporate office. As part of this responsibility, the Controller ensures that company accounting procedures and financial reports conform to generally accepted accounting principles and are prepared and reported timely. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for establishing and executing a comprehensive system of internal financial controls to ensure accurate and timely reporting of financial results. This includes establishing and administering key accounting and operational policies and procedures.
  • Compares performance with operating plans and standards. This includes the disciplined application of accounting policies, the preparation of financial statements and operating data, the coordination of systems and procedures, and special reports, as required.
  • Assures protection for the assets of the business through execution of internal controls and on-going monitoring.
  • Establishes and implements a sound operational and organizational plan in direct support of the business plan.
  • Executes cash disbursements for payment of corporate expenditures in accordance with disbursement policies. Works with FP&A to maintain accurate cash flow analysis.
  • Develops and presents information to senior leaders and assists them with making key decisions by providing sound recommendations and accurate information.
  • Management reporting; provides financial reporting to management on both a routine and ad hoc basis.
  • Recommends and implements internal controls and process improvement within the accounting department as well as any other areas deemed necessary.
  • Responsible for corporate matters including taxes, receivables, payables, financial reporting, capital expenditures, insurance and special projects.
  • ASC 606 and net trade spend revenue reporting unique to the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry
  • Maintain financial books and records consistent with US GAAP.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Assures that the duties, responsibilities, and authority of each job are clearly defined, effective, and communicated to incumbents.
  • Assures that accounting department training and development needs are identified and programs initiated.
  • Assures that qualified personnel are selected and that orientation and on-the-job training programs are conducted and effective.
  • Develops an adequate plan for backup and succession of management.
  • Assures that positive employee relationships are maintained. Ensures that the company's management principles, policies, and programs are consistently practiced.
  • Assures that the necessary responsiveness within the area of responsibility is taking place and that coordination of the assigned responsibilities with those of corporate units is taking place. Resolves problems involving coordination and responsiveness of the accounting
  • Consults with all segments of management responsible for policy or action. Makes recommendations for improving the effectiveness of policy or practices.
  • Acts within scope of authority and consistent with company and corporate objectives, guidelines, policies, and practices.
  • Ensures optimum performance of the function. Recommends and implements techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain best practices.

Organizational Relationships:

  • Reports to the VP Finance & Go To Market
  • Areas and/or departments under the direct responsibility of the Controller including: GL Accounting, Financial Reporting, Tax, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, Plant/cost accounting, ERP system and financial reporting
  • Advises, consults, and coordinates with:
    • External auditors – to ensure that a clean annual audit is completed on a timely basis.
    • Tax accountants for annual preparation of corporate income tax returns
    • Any and all departments that have a revenue\expense impact. 

Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Accounting
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • A minimum of ten years experience ideally gained through increasingly responsible management positions within Accounting
  • A minimum of 3 years' recent experience as a Controller
  • Working knowledge of manual and automated accounting systems, well-developed financial analysis capabilities, and demonstrated ability to manage applications.
  • Previous experience with financial accounting system conversion is preferred.
  • Sound administrative skills. Well-developed management skills—principles and people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in conjunction with external auditors to produce accurate financial statements, related documentation, and timely audit completion.
  • Experienced with companies that have manufacturing operations.
  • Proficient with Excel and NetSuite or other recognized Accounting systems.
  • Professional appearance and strong character.
  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and work ethic
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation: Range is $180,000 - $215,000, including a potential annual bonus and stock options. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.
