Director of Marketing

Remote - US

Medium is building the best place for reading and writing on the internet—a place where today’s smartest writers, thinkers, experts, and storytellers can share big, interesting ideas; a place where ideas are judged on the value they provide to readers, not the fleeting attention they can attract for advertisers.

Our approach is different, and our marketing needs to be, too. Medium has powerful, under-leveraged assets—starting with tens of millions of email relationships with readers. We have the kind of first-party access most platforms dream of: a vibrant ecosystem of hundreds of thousands of writers and editors and early visibility into what’s trending across the platform. The right marketer will know how to turn those signals, voices, and channels into momentum—this win-win approach to marketing helps amplify Medium by amplifying the best of our community.

Role overview

As Director of Marketing, you’ll build and lead Medium’s marketing team. You see marketing as both a system and a craft, and understand both the technical and creative sides of effective marketing. We want someone who sees the big opportunities at Medium and the big developments in the industry—in particular, the growth of AI tools and the new approaches they unlock—and wants to take advantage of them.

Medium is not chasing scale for scale’s sake. We're building a home for meaningful content, and we’re doing it thoughtfully. As Director of Marketing, you’ll play a critical role in shaping how we grow. You won’t be handed a plug-and-play roadmap. Instead, you’ll help write it—this isn’t a role for someone looking to execute tried-and-true B2B or B2C playbooks. Medium demands its own approach—one rooted in storytelling, authenticity, and deep understanding of what motivates writers. If you’re the kind of marketer who gets excited about articulating the “why” behind a platform, building systems that scale, and developing messaging that resonates with thinkers and creatives, you’ll thrive here.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Medium’s holistic marketing strategy. You'll build the blueprint—not just campaigns, but the systems, frameworks, and team to bring it all to life.
  • Own audience growth for writers. Design programs, partnerships, and campaigns that bring high-quality contributors to Medium and help them succeed.
  • Build and lead a nimble, creative team. Manage and evolve a small but mighty marketing org, including product marketing, brand, email, and external contributors.
  • Turn users into advocates. Develop processes that leverage Medium’s existing content and contributors as organic, scalable marketing assets.
  • Establish measurement and attribution frameworks. Build the systems to understand what’s working—and what’s worth doing more of.
  • Attend Medium’s twice-yearly, in-person offsites (hosted in locations around the U.S.).

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • 7+ years of marketing experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role.
  • A builder at heart—you’ve grown a marketing function from early stages or zero.
  • Strong across both brand and performance: you understand the value of resonance and results.
  • Deeply strategic, but not above rolling up your sleeves to write copy, run experiments, or launch a campaign.
  • Experienced in social media, user-generated, or subscription-based platforms.
  • Analytical and systems-oriented: You’re comfortable owning attribution models, dashboards, and KPIs.
  • Values-driven: you believe that marketing can be thoughtful and ethical—and still drive business growth.
  • Experienced in leveraging user-generated content as authentic marketing.

Benefits

In addition to the new skills you'll pick up, here's what else you'll enjoy by working at Medium:

  • Working with a fully distributed team: We’re fully remote and have teammates across the U.S. & France.
  • Healthcare benefits covered at 100% for employees and 70% for dependents.
  • Generous parental leave policy & child education stipend.
  • Mental health support through Talkspace.
  • Financial wellness support through Northstar.
  • Stipends for wellness, co-working, professional development, wifi and a one-time home office bonus.
  • Unlimited PTO and standard company holidays.
  • A discounted Medium membership.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
