Senior Vice President of Engineering

Remote - Home Based

Job Summary:

Reporting to the CEO and serving on the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), the Senior Vice President of Engineering leads Engineering, Test, IT Operations, and Deployment teams. Working closely with Product Management, this role is responsible for driving Medrio’s AI-first engineering strategy, delivering software that customers trust, and building the high-performance team and technical infrastructure needed to reach $100M in bookings by 2028. The VP of Engineering owns architecture, security posture, delivery standards, and the engineering organization’s culture, talent, and operational health.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

AI & Architecture

  • Drive adoption of AI-assisted development (AIAD) across the engineering org — from rapid prototyping to enterprise-grade production software
  • Own cloud-native architecture decisions across a multi-product SaaS platform; build modular, multi-tenant systems that maximize common platform reuse
  • Identify where AI creates distinct, defensible advantages in the product and SDLC

Delivery & Operations

  • Drive consistent, methodology-agnostic delivery (Scrum, Kanban, Hybrid); own the Definition of Done
  • Lead IT operations and deployment/release engineering — own system uptime, incident response, and release integrity
  • Translate raw delivery data and JIRA metrics into strategic insights for the ELT
  • Optimize the development lifecycle by eliminating bottlenecks and automating repetitive workflows

Security & Regulatory Stewardship

  • Own Medrio’s security posture and ensure on-time renewal of ISO 27001/27701, SOC 2, HIPAA, and GDPR
  • Manage regulatory compliance proactively — GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, and evolving requirements

Stakeholder & Influence

  • Partner with the VP of Product on roadmap tradeoffs and shared accountability for launch outcomes
  • Interact with customers, strategic partners, and the Board to shape opportunities and roadmaps
  • Negotiate vendor, cloud, offshore, and customer commercial contracts
  • Support new investment in Medrio and company acquisition through technical due diligence

People Leadership

  • Lead a mixed org of engineering directors, senior managers, and senior ICs (staff/principal engineers) simultaneously
  • Build and maintain an A-player engineering team through structured performance management, recruiting, and active talent development
  • Own the engineering opex budget and long-range resource planning

SMB Market Focus

  • Position Medrio as the fastest-to-deploy, easiest-to-use platform in the SMB clinical trial market
  • Resist scope creep from large-customer requests that distract from the core SMB product strategy

Customers or Clients:

  • CEO and Executive Leadership Team
  • Board of Directors (as needed)
  • VP of Product and product leadership
  • Engineering, QA, IT Operations, and Deployment teams
  • Customers and strategic external partners
  • Offshore and vendor partners

Education and Years of Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related technical field (Master’s degree strongly preferred)
  • 10+ years in software engineering, including 5+ years in SVP-level or equivalent engineering leadership
  • Demonstrated experience leading a mixed org — both senior managers/directors AND senior ICs (staff or principal engineers) reporting directly
  • Track record of developing engineering leaders internally and building bench strength
  • Hands-on experience deploying AI-assisted development tooling at organization scale
  • Deep expertise with at least one major cloud provider (AWS preferred) and cloud-native architecture
  • Direct experience managing HIPAA, SOC 2, and ISO 27001 compliance
  • Experience leading IT operations and deployment/release engineering functions
  • Engineering budget ownership — opex planning, vendor contracts, cloud cost management
  • Life sciences or clinical trial industry experience preferred; GxP and 21 CFR Part 11 familiarity strongly preferred

Working Conditions (include any required travel): Remote home office. Standard office conditions. Occasional domestic and international travel for customer visits and industry events.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • AI for cloud software development, AI agents, and AI-assisted SDLC
  • Steve Blank’s Customer Development methodology
  • Lead, manage and hold accountable (LMA) according to Medrio standards
  • Deep knowledge of clinical trial workflows, regulations (Part 11, GxP), and the purchasing process of CROs versus sponsors
  • Offshore and distributed engineering team management
  • Vendor and commercial contract negotiation
  • Proficiency in engineering delivery metrics and executive reporting frameworks
  • Ability to self-serve using JIRA and related engineering systems of record

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
