Senior Brand Designer - Art Director
In 1954, architect Eero Saarinen designed a radically modern bank branch for Irwin Union in Columbus, Indiana. With glass walls, no private offices, and a floor plan that invited openness, it embodied a new kind of transparency in finance. The building was surrounded by trees, furnished by Herman Miller, and featured rustic brick flooring. Today, that space is a conference center, and that spirit of design-forward thinking in banking feels almost extinct.
Mercury believes that level of care and craft in design has been lost in modern finance and we’re building a brand that brings it back. We're a financial technology company building products that feel extraordinary to use—helping people and businesses accomplish more with their money by turning banking* from a frustration into a catalyst for their ambitions.
We’re looking for a hands-on art director to help shape how Mercury shows up visually, emotionally, and creatively across every touchpoint. Someone who thrives in a highly collaborative environment where the best ideas drive progress, not the most powerful voices in the room.
*Mercury is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services provided by Choice Financial Group, Column N.A., and Evolve Bank & Trust, Members FDIC.
In this role, you’ll:
- Concept, iterate, and deliver sophisticated editorial design primarily for Meridian, our digital and print magazine, along with compelling illustrations, data visualizations, and support for video editing across various storytelling platforms.
- Art direct and commission original artwork, collaborating with illustrators, photographers, and other creatives to bring the narrative vision of stories to life.
- Support photo and video shoots on set, guiding visual direction, and collaborating closely with the production crew to bring the creative vision to life.
- Develop a deep understanding of Mercury's brand, storytelling approach, and audience, crafting visuals that resonate and elevate our content strategically.
- Influence and inspire the broader design team and cross-functional partners through your refined taste, clear art direction, and thoughtful execution.
- Effectively balance multiple projects, from concepting through to final execution, managing timelines with clarity and calm.
- Collaborate proactively and communicate effectively in an environment that values diverse perspectives, creativity, and innovation.
What you’ll bring:
- 5+ years of professional experience in graphic design, illustration, and art direction, ideally within editorial, digital storytelling, or content-driven environments.
- A standout portfolio demonstrating sophisticated brand design projects, thoughtful art direction, impactful illustrations, and elegant data visualizations.
- Expertise in guiding creative vision with strong taste, capable of elevating narratives through visual storytelling.
- Comfort and curiosity in exploring new visual approaches and embracing ambiguity to drive innovative outcomes.
- Experience working on print magazines and preparing clean, production-ready print files, with proficiency in print tools such as Adobe InDesign and a solid understanding of prepress best practices.
- Commitment to design excellence with meticulous attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, able to clearly articulate concepts, ideas, and creative decisions to internal teams and external partners.
- Proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and familiarity with video editing tools - motion design expertise is highly desirable.
- Passion for collaborating closely with other designers and cross-functional partners to enhance storytelling and elevate creative execution.
