Senior Brand Designer - Expressive UI

San Francisco, CA, New York, NY, Portland, OR, or Remote within Canada or United States

In 1954, architect Eero Saarinen designed a radically modern bank branch for Irwin Union in Columbus, Indiana. With glass walls, no private offices, and a floor plan that invited openness, it embodied a new kind of transparency in finance. The building was surrounded by trees, furnished by Herman Miller, and featured rustic brick flooring. Today, that space is a conference center, and that spirit of design-forward thinking in banking feels all but extinct.

Mercury believes that level of care and craft in design has been lost in modern finance and we’re building a brand that brings it back. We're a financial technology company building products that feel extraordinary to use. We help people and businesses accomplish more with their money by turning banking* from a frustration into a catalyst for their ambitions.

We’re looking for a designer to help shape how Mercury shows up visually, emotionally, and creatively across our product and website. Someone who thrives in a highly collaborative environment where the best ideas drive progress, not the most powerful voices in the room.

*Mercury is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group, Column N.A., and Evolve Bank & Trust, Members FDIC.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Shape visual design, motion, and evolution of our emerging interfaces in product and web, ensuring our brand comes to life through the user experience.
  • Lead with an AI-first design and development mindset.
  • Shape core aspects of the Mercury UI.
  • Elevate brand expression through innovative and opinionated visual design and visual asset libraries, ensuring unique brand moments at the right touchpoints for our users.
  • Help build our design system by creating comprehensive frameworks, documentation, and libraries that other designers can follow to bring their work to life visually.
  • Contribute to high-level strategic decisions with the rest of the product and executive teams.
  • Give and solicit feedback from other designers to continually raise our bar for quality.
  • Champion craft and clarity in every deliverable from the initial sketch to final production files.
  • Effectively balance multiple projects, from concepting through to final execution, managing timelines with clarity and calm.
  • Collaborate proactively and communicate effectively in an environment that values diverse perspectives, creativity, and innovation.

What you’ll bring:

  • 7–10 years of experience in brand design, art direction, or visual communication, ideally with a mix of in-house and agency experience.
  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates conceptual range, systems thinking, and refined visual execution across digital interfaces.
  • Experience building and evolving apps.
  • A passion for turning complex problems into simple but expressive UI.
  • Outstanding systems thinking, visual design, and product thinking.
  • Experience applying research, usability tests, and metrics to inform design decisions.
  • Comfort with an iterative design process that includes accepting and acting on feedback.
  • Strong analytical, technical, and strategic experience.
  • Experience defining motion libraries for UI.
  • Experience building data visualization libraries consumed by product teams.
  • Experience collaborating across disciplines to lead or support a new idea or product to launch.
  • Experience conducting and guiding user research and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Proven skills in presenting work, workshopping concepts, and evangelizing new ideas.
  • Experience with front-end engineering constraints and direct experience partnering with engineers.
  • 6+ years of experience on creative teams and in technical environments.
  • 8+ years of software design, visual design, interaction design, UX design, and prototyping experience.
