Scientist, RNA Biology and Optimization
Metagenomi is a gene editing company committed to developing potentially curative therapeutics by leveraging a proprietary toolbox of next-generation gene editing systems to accurately edit DNA where current technologies cannot. Our metagenomics-powered discovery platform and analytical expertise reveal novel cellular machinery sourced from otherwise unknown organisms. We adapt and forge these naturally evolved systems into powerful gene editing systems that are ultra-small, extremely efficient, highly specific and have a decreased risk of immune response. These systems fuel our pipeline of novel medicines and can be leveraged by partners. Our goal is to revolutionize gene editing for the benefit of patients around the world.
Whether it's the biological diversity of our gene editing systems or the people that help discover them, Metagenomi celebrates the diversity of life. This is achieved through a compassionate culture that acknowledges the dimensions of our diversity. We know that when people feel a sense of inclusion and belonging in the workplace, they have a safe space to bring creativity and innovation to everything they do. We are intentional about building and maintaining a culture where people are valued and respected, there is equity in opportunities, and our respective opinions and differences matter.
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Scientist to contribute to the development of mRNA optimization workflows supporting our gene editing platforms and pre-clinical therapeutic programs. In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including our in vivo Delivery Team, to design and implement assays that evaluate the potency and delivery of our next-generation gene editing systems. This position offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of nucleic acid-based therapies and make a tangible impact on the advancement of therapeutic solutions. This position is located in Emeryville, California.
What You’ll Do

- Collaborate with multiple departments to ensure successful cross-functional integration of mRNA technologies.
- Analyze experimental data and present findings at team and company-wide meetings.
- Prepare comprehensive data summaries and contribute to the writing of technical reports, patent applications, and scientific publications.
- Continuously expand your scientific skills and contribute to the advancement of mRNA-based therapies.
What You Bring
- PhD in biology, bioengineering, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 1 year of industry experience, with hands-on expertise in cloning, in vitro transcription, and nucleic acid assay development (e.g., RT-qPCR, ddPCR).
- Proficiency in cell culture techniques, with experience in primary hepatocytes preferred.
- Experience in the design, QC, and testing of mRNA-based therapeutics.
- Familiarity with automated 96-well plasmid preparation and DNA/RNA purification techniques.
- Experience with gene editing technologies, animal models.
- Familiarity with protein detection assays using ELISA or Western blot techniques for quantification and analysis of protein expression from various biological samples.
