Director of Clinical Informatics and Athena EHR - MD, NP or RN
The Director of Clinical Informatics plays a crucial role in managing and optimizing our electronic health record (EHR) system, Athena Health. This position ensures that the EHR system enhances patient care and operational efficiency across the organization. The Director will also lead the development of comprehensive training programs to support clinical staff in effectively utilizing the system, serving as a key liaison between clinical, IT, and external partners.
- Clinical background, trained as Clinical Informaticist
- Partner to product and engineering, agent for IWC care delivery
- Athena expert user and experienced configuration (telehealth, or multiple practices)
- Oversees the strategic direction and operations of the department.
- WIth Product / Eng, oversee strategic partnership relationships: Athena, Clinical and Clin Ops AI
- Ensure strategic partnership deliverables against contracts are measured, monitored and enforce corrective action planning if vendor in breach of deliverables or quality
- Ensures alignment with organizational goals and regulatory compliance.
- Manages partnerships with healthcare systems and external stakeholders.
- Reviews and approves workflow optimizations and quality initiatives.
- Provides leadership for training programs and clinical informatics innovation
- Implementing and managing safety alerts can significantly affect clinical workflows, requiring the director to balance safety with efficiency. This makes change management skills essential for the role.
- Leads with patient safety as priority, ensures safety alerts are active and monitors effectiveness.. Overseeing safety alerts requires meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of both clinical practices and the informatics systems that support them. This role demands not only technical expertise but also an ability to apply clinical knowledge effectively.
- Effective management of safety alerts is often tied to regulatory compliance, ensuring that the organization adheres to industry standards and reduces liability risks related to patient care.
- Oversight of advanced impact planning: release note review, impact to Midi → testing, flagging issues, block before launch (if/when necessary)
- Rapid response development
- This responsibility highlights the need for coordination between clinical, IT, and informatics teams. The director will need to work closely with various stakeholders to implement and maintain effective alert systems.
- Oversight of the Clinical Informatics team which includes manager, EHR configuration specialist, and others
- Accountable for the service first culture mindset of the team, the data informed and measured improvements of initiatives, launches and cutovers, for the hygiene and technical maintenance of our EHR and other tools
Experience:
- Clinical Background: MD, NP, or RN with training in clinical informatics.
- EHR Expertise: Advanced user of Athena Health EHR with experience in system configuration, including telehealth and multi-practice environments.
- Leadership: Proven ability to oversee clinical informatics teams, including managers and configuration specialists.
- Strategic Partnership Management: Experience collaborating with product, engineering, and external stakeholders to align on care delivery and operational goals.
- Regulatory Compliance: Skilled in ensuring alignment with industry standards and adherence to safety and quality regulations.
- Change Management: Expertise in implementing change and managing their impact on clinical workflows.
- Quality Initiatives: Track record of reviewing and approving workflow optimizations to improve care delivery and operational efficiency.
- Effective training: Experience in developing training programs and driving informatics innovations.
Qualifications:
- Education: Advanced degree in a clinical field (MD, NP, or RN)
- Education: Formal training in clinical informatics, computer science or computer engineering
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in EHR management, particularly Athena Health, and familiarity with clinical operations and AI tools.
- Strategic Planning: Ability to oversee advanced impact planning, including release note reviews, issue flagging, and pre-launch testing.
- Problem-Solving: Rapid response development and proactive troubleshooting to address system or vendor issues.
- Communication: Strong liaison capabilities between clinical, IT, and external teams to ensure cohesive implementation of informatics strategies.
- Data-Driven Mindset: Competency in leveraging data to inform service improvement initiatives and maintain system hygiene.
