Communications and Public Affairs Intern

Washington, DC

Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

Role Description:

We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Communications and Public Affairs Intern to support our Communications and Public Affairs efforts. This role is ideal for a student or recent graduate looking to gain hands-on experience in media relations, market research, and strategic communications. The intern will work closely with our communications team to manage events, track media coverage, research industry trends, and help maintain strong relationships with journalists and media outlets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and update media lists.
  • Assist in local media pitching, drafting outreach emails and press materials.
  • Vet media opportunities by assessing publications, journalists, and potential partnerships.
  • Prepare briefing documents for interviews, media appearances, and events.
  • Compile and distribute coverage reports and media clips to internal stakeholders.
  • Conduct market research to identify industry trends and media opportunities.
  • Perform industry landscaping to analyze how key stakeholders engage with media, events, and the public.
  • Manage project details, content, and RSVPs for media events.
  • Manage the Media Coverage Tracker, ensuring all press mentions and relevant media hits are accurately recorded.

Requirements:

  • Self-starter: ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to synthesize information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Highly organized and proactive, with strong time management skills.
  • Interest in media relations, public relations, journalism, or communications.
  • Experience with media monitoring tools (e.g., Muckrack, Cision) is a plus but not required.
  • Based in Washington, D.C.
  • Reliable transportation that allows 2-3 days in office.

The estimated base hourly range for this position is $35 to $45, which does not include the value of benefits or a potential equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs. At Mill, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor an employment visa for this role
