
Director of Data Operations

Position
MIO’s Portfolio Analytics Group is seeking a Director of Data Operations to lead our data acquisition and validation engine. The individual will be responsible for defining our end-to-end strategy for manager data, including identifying new data sources, building and overseeing the pipes to ingest data, establishing and running processes to standardize unstructured and bespoke data, developing quality control mechanisms, and ensuring that questions from stakeholders are thoughtfully and quickly answered. In this capacity, the Director of Data Operations will oversee an internal team of analysts and manage external service provider relationships.
The Group
The Portfolio Analytics Group (PAG) core function is to provide decision support to the Investment team by (i) maintaining and evolving MIO's manager selection analytics and (ii) provisioning data and using data-driven analytics to create an edge in our investment processes. In addition, the group provides input on various ad-hoc analyses that support our CIO and portfolio managers in our manager selection investment process. The group also acts as the fundamental center of competence, producing routine performance and risk reports for Risk and Advisory. The PAG team co-owns MIO's attribution system, which is central to managing our investment team and systemic risks across our portfolio.
Primary responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Data Team (7-9 staff members).
- Design and oversee a robust process to ingest data, working closely with the internal data team and external service providers.
- Define and implement the standards for manager data collection, cleaning, and storage at MIO.
- Develop and ensure the execution of data quality control mechanisms.
- Work cross-functionally to understand and execute upon the various data requirements across the organization.
- Design and manage multiple projects within the team, while meeting deliverables and reporting status to senior management.
- Develop and mentor junior staff while providing constructive feedback and evaluation.
- Lead the team in providing thoughtful responses to questions from stakeholders
Likely profile of the successful candidate
- Ability to translate data requests from key stakeholders into robust, reliable, and repeatable data delivery operations: A high performer in this role will be the expert on Data Operations. In this capacity they will be able to handle requests with sometimes ambiguous requirements and turn them into an actionable plan that is well positioned to be successful in the long term.
- Strong process management orientation and skills: The ideal candidate must have a sensibility of how to implement processes that are fit for purpose. This involves establishing clear guidelines, workflows, and procedures for the team to follow.
- Effective at prioritizing quick-wins vs. longer-term deliverables. The primary goal of this role is to improve the user experience for MIO’s investment team. In the effort to satisfy this goal, the candidate must be able to effectively prioritize a constantly growing list of requests, while making sure to deliver quick improvements to the user experience where practicable.
- Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills: The ideal candidate must possess strong communication skills and the ability to foster relationships, catering to the data needs of demanding stakeholders across Investments, Risk, Finance, and IT.
- Strong organizational skills, team and project management proficiency: The role involves simultaneously managing numerous data related projects while also monitoring the team’s ongoing data processes and procedures, requiring an inherently organized candidate that is adept at both project and people management. The successful candidate will set realistic yet ambitious milestones to ensure timely project progression and skillfully manage communication with all stakeholders to keep projects on course and aligned with expectations.
- Familiarity with large sets of data and database structures: The candidate in this role must think strategically about how to best maintain the data in both the short and long term. This often involves implementing quick to market data storage methods while developing a clear understanding of the scope for eventual transition to a more robust data storage framework.
- Foundational understanding of financial analysis/accounting terms and concepts: Much of the data relevant to this role is in one way or another related to accounting and financial information. Having a strong understanding of these concepts provides the foundation for making informed decisions about our processes and pipelines of acquiring and cleaning data.
- Experience sourcing and maintaining external service provider relationships
- Proficiency with office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) required; proficiency in data management tools is a strong plus. (e.g., Tableau).
Desired Background
The Director of Data Operations should be highly motivated, collaborative, accustomed to working in a fast paced environment, and have experience leading a team.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Information Systems, Business Administration, Computer Science, or related field, or relevant work experience
- At least eight years of experience at an industry leader in financial services; ideally with a focus in data operations and data analysis

Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors, including, but not limited to an individual’s assigned office location, experience, and expertise. Certain roles are also eligible for bonuses, subject to MIO’s discretion and based on factors such as individual and/or organizational performance. Base salary range
$175,000 - $175,000 USD
