
Senior Director, Data Engineering & Architecture

POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking an accomplished and visionary Senior Director of Enterprise Data Architecture, Engineering, and Operations to lead and evolve our data strategy in support of our growing biopharmaceutical business. This role will be responsible for driving the design, implementation, and operational excellence of enterprise-wide data platforms, ensuring robust data architecture, engineering best practices, and reliable operations. The successful candidate will work cross-functionally to enable data-driven decision-making, accelerate R&D, support clinical and commercial functions, and ensure data compliance and governance in a regulated environment.
JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute the enterprise data strategy aligned with business goals across R&D, Clinical, Regulatory, Commercial, and G&A domains.
- Partner with business stakeholders, IT leadership, and external partners to shape a unified data vision and roadmap.
- Lead data platform modernization efforts including cloud data lake/warehouse, master data management, and advanced analytics platforms.
Enterprise Data Architecture
- Design and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance data architectures for structured and unstructured data.
- Establish enterprise-wide data standards, models, taxonomies, and ontologies that support scientific, operational, and commercial needs.
- Ensure architectural alignment with data privacy, regulatory, and compliance requirements (e.g., HIPAA, GxP, GDPR, 21 CFR Part 11).
Data Engineering and Integration
- Oversee the development of robust pipelines for data ingestion, transformation, and curation across internal and external sources.
- Champion the adoption of modern data engineering technologies (e.g., ELT/ETL tools, APIs, event streaming) and DevOps/CI-CD practices.
- Manage the integration of clinical, commercial, financial, and operational systems with enterprise data platforms.
Data Operations and Governance
- Lead the operational support and service delivery for enterprise data platforms, ensuring uptime, performance, and scalability.
- Define and oversee data governance practices in collaboration with legal, compliance, and business teams.
- Implement data cataloging, lineage, and metadata management to support discoverability and traceability.
Team Leadership and Vendor Management
- Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team of data architects, engineers, and platform operations staff.
- Manage vendor relationships and oversee contracts related to data platforms, managed services, and system integrators.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field; Master’s degree preferred.
- 12+ years in enterprise data engineering or architecture roles, including 5+ years leading teams.
- Proven success leading complex, multi-system data environments in life sciences or regulated industries.
- Experience with modern cloud-based data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, AWS/GCP/Azure).
- Deep understanding of data governance, MDM, and integration best practices.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience supporting commercial operations (Salesforce, field analytics, MAP/HUB integrations).
- Familiarity with HRIS and G&A data integrations.
- Demonstrated leadership in enterprise-scale transformation or platform modernization.
The salary range for this position is $270,000 to $285,000 USD. Compensation will be determined based on several factors including, but not limited to; skill set, years of experience, and the employee’s geographic location. Please note that the required compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include bonus, equity, or benefits unless otherwise provided.
