Job Overview 

The Database Administrator I on the MSSQL Team will perform database server processing primarily within Windows and Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) environments but can include other acquired environments as well. Work involves installing, configuring, maintaining and managing database environments. A skilled resource with MSSQL with a strong focus on troubleshooting and performance.  This work will involve creating SQL code and database queries. Work under limited supervision with some latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

The ideal candidate will have solid technical skills and a desire to learn how to build and maintain high-availability and high-performance database environments.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with a team to provide 24x7 production support.
  • Proactively monitor databases and servers for uptime and performance.
  • Enforce and maintain backup and recovery policies and procedures.
  • Perform database tuning and performance monitoring.
  • Establish and maintain documentation and standards.
  • Enforce and maintain all aspects of database security.
  • Design, implement, and maintain MSSQL databases.
  • Perform database refreshes, cloning, backup, and recovery.
  • Perform software and security upgrades to databases where appropriate.
  • Use scripts to automate routine tasks and gather data for performance tuning.
  • Monitor server and database security and logs.
  • Assist with database patching and upgrades.
  • Learn and support new database technologies gained through acquisition.
  • Provide technical advice and architectural guidance.
  • Train other DBAs on the team with acquired knowledge.
  • Perform problem determination and root-cause-analysis.
  • Document technical environments, processes and procedures, testing plans, project plans.
  • Experience managing SQL Server on VMs.
  • Experience managing Azure SQL Managed Instances and/or Azure SQL Database.
  • Assist with capacity planning.
  • Execute and assist with disaster recovery plan / testing.
  • Participate in on-call rotation.

Requirements & Skills:

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience managing Microsoft SQL Server database environments.
  • Ability to communicate changes, write documentation and train other personnel.
  • Experience managing SQL Server on VMs.
  • Experience managing Azure SQL Managed Instances and/or Azure SQL Database.

Education:                         

  • Bachelor degree in MIS, technical discipline or equivalent experience
