
Director, Remote Technical Operations
The Director, Remote Technical Operations supervises the technical and engineering set up for all MLB Network/NHL Network remote operations.
Responsibilities:
- Direct the technical aspects of various remote events including spring training, Showcase Games, All Star Game, Division Series Games, Hall of Fame Induction, World Series, Winter Meetings, AFL and other miscellaneous shows.
- Manage the Technical Manager.
- Act as the technical liaison to MLBI, MLB.COM, MLB Local Media and other entities regarding joint remote projects.
- Oversee all technical planning for all NHL Network remotes. This includes NHL Showcase, All Star Game, Winter Classic, Stadium Series and Stanley Cup Finals.
- Manage Staff and Freelance technical personnel as it pertains to remote events.
- Assist with budget process as it pertains to remote technical and engineering line items.
- Assist with vendor RFP’s including mobile unit, fiber, RF, technical enhancements and various other vendor sourcing needed on an ad hoc basis.
- Foster an environment of teamwork with local/travel crews and within the Remote Operations group.
- Devise technical operational plans with MLBN Engineering and MLBN Operations for remote events.
- Keep current with emerging technologies and applications for technical innovations and lead discussions regarding upgrades and enhancements to our MLBN remotes.
- Assist Ballpark Cam engineering as needed.
- Create /update technical drawings and schematics.
- Other such duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills:
- The position requires significant hands-on experience, at least 10+ years, in broadcast televisions facilities having file-based server workflows, live studios, post-production systems, transmission lines (both baseband and via IP), VoIP intercom systems, networked audio rooms, HD routers, multiviewer technology and other IP-based broadcast systems.
- The candidate must have the ability to effectively manage a technical team and foster a team-orientated environment in the live sports remote industry.
- Demonstrate the tact, diplomacy, decisiveness, and superior people skills required in the pressurized environment of live television.
- Ability to work effectively and multi-task in a dynamic television broadcast environment.
- Must be able to analyze complex problems and make effective recommendations for corrective action.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to make design recommendations and implementation of new technologies.
- Must be detail oriented, meticulous and able to maintain confidentiality.
- Strong collaboration skills are required in order to interface with multiple groups.
- Hands-on experience with encoding systems.
- Hands-on experience with fiber transmissions.
- Understand the effects of hostile environments on electronic systems and ability to adjust each system accordingly.
- Ability to create processes in a new and dynamic environment.
- Working knowledge of HD television systems and formats.
- Must be able to travel regularly domestically and/or internationally, especially on short notice.
- In-depth knowledge of computer and IT network systems, with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio, Outlook.
- Working knowledge of CAD is a plus.
- This position requires a highly organized, self-motivated individual who can interface with a diverse group of people and situations.
- This position requires the ability to prioritize and to be a proactive thinker
- Ability to climb stairs, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work effectively while exposed to varying and unpredictable weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, etc.
- The ability to work a flexible schedule as required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Possess visual acuity sufficient to perform required tasks.
- Possess manual dexterity sufficient to perform required tasks.
- Possess the auditory acuity needed to effectively create required work product.
- Must possess excellent analytical and communication skills.
- Prompt and regular attendance at an assigned work location.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in broadcast technology / engineering or equivalent related experience.
Position Reports to:
- Vice President, Remote Operations
Pay Range: $155,000.00 - $195,000.00
