Contract - Technical Writer - Game Development Systems
Mob Entertainment is a startup multimedia studio that is best known for our hit indie horror game "Poppy Playtime". This franchise is one of the hottest new properties in gaming, and our team is naturally expanding as our ambition expands. To give a taste of our brand's popularity, more than 100 billion YouTube views of Poppy Playtime related content have occured since the game's launch 4 years ago.
Mob Entertainment is seeking a Technical Writer to join our team on a contract basis, supporting ongoing development on one of our upcoming titles. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on untangling complex technical systems, structuring documentation for clarity, and ensuring that technical knowledge is accessible and actionable across disciplines.
You’ll work closely with engineers, technical designers, and system owners to capture how the game's core technologies work - whether it’s tools, architecture, or runtime behaviors - and convert that into clear, consistent documentation that the rest of the team can reference and build upon.
This role will have a direct and measurable impact on engineering efficiency, onboarding, cross-team alignment, and long-term maintainability.
Responsibilities
- Audit and assess existing undocumented systems and tools to identify areas of missing or outdated documentation.
- Interview and collaborate with engineers and technical stakeholders to gather information about architecture, systems behavior, tool usage, and best practices.
- Create and maintain internal technical documentation for systems, pipelines, APIs, toolchains, workflows, and engine integrations.
- Organize documentation in a clear, accessible, and searchable format using Confluence or equivalent platforms.
- Write step-by-step implementation guides, usage references, system diagrams, glossary entries, and how-to articles tailored for both technical and non-technical team members.
- Establish and promote documentation standards, templates, and style guides to ensure long-term consistency.
- Proactively work with teams to prioritize what needs documentation first, balancing engineering bandwidth with cross-discipline needs.
- Partner with production to track documentation progress and surface blockers or required inputs.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a technical writer, systems designer, or tools specialist in a game development or software engineering environment.
- Ability to understand and explain complex technical systems in a way that’s readable, structured, and useful to multiple roles.
- Strong writing, editing, and information architecture skills with a focus on clarity, brevity, and usability.
- Experience documenting systems in Confluence, Notion, or similar platforms, including use of macros, tables, and linked references.
- Comfort reading and referencing Unreal Engine systems, Blueprint logic, and C++ architecture (you don’t need to write code—but you need to parse it).
- Able to manage multiple documentation tasks simultaneously, and prioritize effectively based on development cycles and team needs.
- Self-motivated, collaborative, and able to drive initiatives with limited direction once the scope is understood.
Pluses
- Previous experience documenting tools, pipelines, or engine systems for a live or shipped game.
- Familiarity with Unreal Engine 4/5, especially from a scripting, tooling, or gameplay systems perspective.
- Background in technical design or production, with an understanding of the documentation needs of non-engineering teams.
- Experience building or maintaining a documentation portal or wiki-style resource hub.
- Ability to create visual diagrams or flowcharts using tools like draw.io, Lucidchart, or Miro.
Performance Expectations
- Produce clear, complete, and well-organized documentation that enables faster onboarding, easier debugging, and cross-discipline understanding.
- Establish a sustainable documentation process for engineering knowledge to be maintained beyond your contract.
- Act as a bridge between engineers and non-technical teammates, translating intent into clarity.
- Help the studio preserve and scale its technical knowledge as projects grow in complexity.
Reporting & Oversight
- Reports to: Game Director & Engineering Lead
- Works closely with: Engineers, Technical Designers, Production, QA, and Tool Users
- Communication Tools: Confluence, Slack, Jira, Unreal Engine, Miro
If you're a clear communicator, systems thinker, and love organizing technical chaos into clean structure, we’d love to bring you on board.
