he Medical Coding Supervisor is a leadership role within ModMed India Operations. They act as subject matter expert (SME) in multi-specialty medical coding and documentation requirements and are experts in coding quality assurance auditing. This position supervises our internal coding team and manages processes, workflows, and functions related to medical coding and auditing. Additionally, the Medical Coding Supervisor monitors our global coding partners' performance, quality of work, and coding effectiveness to ensure optimal results for our RCM clients.

They proactively evaluate the responsibilities and productivity of both the internal and global coding teams to ensure high performance and efficiency. The Medical Coding Supervisor regularly meets with their team to understand their performance, career goals, and development needs. In collaboration with the Manager, they provide coaching, support, and guidance to foster a positive team experience and help team members fulfill the company’s mission to enhance practice RCM efficiency and success.

The ideal candidate for this role is results-driven, decisive, and a self-starter. They are effective communicators, resolution-focused, and have a proven track record of leading a team of certified coders internally and globally. The Medical Coding Supervisor is vital in developing workflows and processes supporting productivity, accuracy, and quality. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Foster a positive work environment that maximizes individual and team performance through communication, training, and coaching. 
  • Communicate, monitor, and support client and company goals and metrics with team members to create alignment and deliver high levels of customer service.
  • Responsible for managing and directing the internal departments' day-to-day functions and processes. 
  • Responsible for overseeing and managing the medical coding quality assurance workflow related to initial claims coding and coding denial support for our BOOST customers. 
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to enhance/improve workflows for efficient, productive, and successful processes to ensure all claims are collected accurately and timely.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining various SOPs/QRGs needed to support all coding workflows for gMed and EMA/PM, from high-level processes to specific functions.
  • Conducts recurring meetings with the internal coding team to review processes and global coding workflows, spearhead any issues, initiate special projects, and identify opportunities to streamline coding quality assurance workflows.
  • Conducts recurring meetings with our global coding vendors on quality accuracy, initial claim coding, denial coding review, coding trend analysis, and other coding-related topics.
  • Provide directives on coding workflow, quality accuracy development, improving workflows, and delegation of work processes among the internal and global teams. 
  • Meets regularly with global partner teams as well as BOOST Client Success teams.
  • Regularly meets with the BOOST onshore coding leadership and team to ensure coding compliance, workflows, consistency, and other needs
  • Directly engaging in problem-solving, clarification, and productive-related issues with their internal direct reports
  • Assists with client-facing communication regarding the coding of BOOST clients to ensure client success, efficiency in coding, and coding accuracy.
  • Ensure coding and billing compliance are performed, monitored, and maintained for gGastro/gMed and EMA/PM BOOST clients.
  • Collaborate with the medical coding and auditing manager on coding, auditing, or billing compliance concerns or issues. 
  • Collaborate or aid in training our internal coding team and global coding partners regarding coding, coding denial review, and quality assurance accuracy.
  • Works with people team partners (e.g., talent acquisition, business partner)  on all aspects of staffing, including interviewing, hiring and training, employee development, etc. 
  • Conducts individual performance meetings (weekly, biweekly, or monthly with their team members.
  • Performs and contributes to annual and mid-year performance evaluations for internal team members.
  • Ensures ModMed billing policies and procedures are followed.
  • Involvement on the BOOST committee calls to determine if coding involvement or assistance is needed. 
  • Able to move within different software platforms and verticals to assist coding and BOOST teams with concerns and coding issues. 
  • Mentor staff to maximize performance, potential, and efficiency and oversee the training of new onboards for gGastro/gMed or EMA/PM. 
  • Performs additional projects and job duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

Any bachelor's degree (Mandaroty) preferably from life science background

Certification in one of the following:  CPC / COC / CCS - P

Hold an additional coding certification - Such as CPMA or CDEO through AAPC or AHIMA which is preferred

Preferred to hold CPMA with AAPC  

Experience and Skills Requirements :

  • 5+ years of experience as a Certified Professional Coder or Certified Coding Specialist required- Physician-based 
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience in leading a team of certified coders required
  • 3+ years of multi-specialty medical coding, billing, and denial coding experience required (e.g.Derm, GI, Podiatry, Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, and OBGYN)
  • 2+ years of coding quality assurance experience required
  • Certified as a CPMA (Certified Professional Medical Auditor) is preferred but can be obtained after onboarding
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills required; working closely within a collaborative 
  • Expertise in developing procedures, protocols, and team workflows for efficiency
  • Expert knowledge in medical coding, auditing, quality assurance, and billing
  • Expertise in medical record review and documentation requirements
  • Understanding of various insurance carriers, including Medicare, private HMOs, PPOs, Capitation, and Workers Comp
  • Developmental skills for creating, maintaining, and implementing coding guidelines, workflows, and process improvements
  • Strong knowledge of Google applications and Microsoft programs (Word and Excel)
  • Ability to motivate, coach, and develop teams, as well as train and guide others in workflows and projects
  • Ability to multitask and delegate appropriately
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent customer service and people skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

  • Acquire and maintain coding knowledge for all scopes of coding and maintain credentials
