ModMed is seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Cloud Engineering to lead and scale our cloud engineering organization. This strategic leadership role will oversee the development, implementation, and optimization of cloud-native solutions at enterprise scale, with a strong focus on AWS cloud-native architecture, cost optimization, FinOps, observability, and site reliability engineering (SRE). The Director will drive cross-functional collaboration, shape cloud strategy, and ensure the reliability, scalability, and security of our cloud infrastructure to support business growth and innovation.

This individual should also possess a solid background in software architecture, product development, and agile practices. This background would enable close collaboration with product and engineering teams to deliver high-quality, scalable solutions with agility and strong technical foundations. NOTE: This role is based at our HQ in Boca Raton, FL.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership and Organizational Management:
    • Provide executive leadership and vision for the cloud engineering organization, scaling the team and capabilities to meet current and future business demands.
    • Develop and execute a comprehensive cloud strategy aligned with company objectives, driving cloud adoption, modernization, and innovation.
    • Lead multiple cloud engineering teams, including managers and senior engineers, fostering a high-performance, inclusive, and collaborative culture.
    • Set clear goals, drive accountability, and ensure ongoing professional development across teams.
  • Cloud Architecture and Engineering Excellence:
    • Oversee the design and implementation of robust, scalable, and secure AWS cloud-native architectures that support business-critical applications.
    • Drive adoption of microservices, serverless, containerized architectures (EKS, ECS), and infrastructure-as-code to improve agility and operational efficiency.
    • Lead efforts in disaster recovery, high availability, and fault-tolerant cloud solutions, ensuring business continuity.
  • Strong SDLC and Engineering Discipline:
    • Champion rigorous software development lifecycle (SDLC) practices to ensure quality, security, and maintainability of cloud applications.
    • Promote a shift-left mentality, integrating testing, security, and compliance early into the development process to detect and resolve issues sooner.
    • Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to embed automation, continuous testing, and code quality standards throughout the SDLC.
  • Financial Stewardship and Cloud Cost Governance:
    • Own cloud budgeting and financial planning, partnering closely with finance and business stakeholders to implement effective FinOps practices.
    • Champion cost optimization initiatives at scale, driving continuous analysis, rightsizing, and cost-saving opportunities across all cloud environments.
    • Develop and enforce policies for cost allocation, chargeback/showback, and financial accountability within the cloud organization.
  • Operational Excellence and Reliability:
    • Embed a strong SRE mindset across engineering teams to enhance system reliability, performance, and scalability.
    • Establish and track service level objectives (SLOs), service level indicators (SLIs), and error budgets to maintain and improve service quality.
    • Promote and oversee comprehensive observability frameworks using monitoring, logging, and alerting tools to enable proactive incident detection and resolution.
  • DevOps and Automation Leadership:
    • Drive the advancement of DevOps best practices, including continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD), automation, and infrastructure-as-code.
    • Encourage the adoption of cutting-edge cloud automation tools and frameworks to improve deployment velocity and operational consistency.
  • Security, Compliance, and Risk Management:
    • Ensure cloud infrastructure and applications adhere to the highest security standards and regulatory compliance requirements.
    • Lead initiatives for identity and access management, data protection, vulnerability management, and risk mitigation.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration and Communication:
    • Collaborate closely with product, engineering, IT, and business leadership to align cloud initiatives with organizational priorities.
    • Effectively communicate cloud strategy, risks, and performance metrics to executive leadership and key stakeholders.
    • Represent the cloud engineering organization in company-wide strategic planning and technical forums.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in cloud engineering, with a significant focus on AWS and cloud-native technologies.
  • Proven success managing large, distributed teams and complex cloud initiatives at an enterprise scale.
  • Deep expertise in AWS cloud-native architecture, including serverless, containers, microservices, and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Strong track record of driving FinOps practices, cloud cost governance, and financial accountability.
  • Demonstrated experience embedding SRE principles and establishing observability frameworks at scale.
  • Expertise in DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, cloud security, and compliance frameworks.
  • Extensive experience with robust SDLC implementation and a proactive shift-left approach to quality and security.
  • Solid background in software architecture, product development, and agile methodologies, facilitating effective partnership with product and engineering teams.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills with experience driving cross-functional collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present technical information to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Skills:

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or equivalent certifications.
  • Experience with large-scale migrations to cloud-native architectures.
  • Familiarity with enterprise cloud governance frameworks and compliance requirements (e.g., HIPAA, PCI, SOC 2).
  • Expertise with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, DataDog, or equivalent.
