We are the go-to steel distributor for the agriculture, auto, and construction industries. Our warehouse carries approximately 3,000 metal products in varying size, shape, and type. In addition to quality metal products, we are also a processing facility.

Our team goes the extra mile with more than 20,000 annual deliveries ranging from the Central Valley to Yosemite. And, on-site we process more than an additional 10,000 transactions. We keep busy around here, which is why we are growing our team. 

Sales Representative

What To Expect In This Position

As a Sales Representative, you will manage a hybrid sales cycle that blends strategic remote account management with targeted face-to-face engagement. You will be responsible for maintaining existing accounts while aggressively establishing new customer relationships. Your primary focus is ensuring customer needs are met through a mix of digital communication and high-impact travel.

You will play a critical role in driving sales efforts within your assigned territory, balancing daily office operations with field visits to ensure Modesto Steel remains a market leader.


Key Responsibilities

Territory & Account Management

  • Strategic Growth: Develop and execute a comprehensive territory plan to achieve monthly, quarterly, and annual sales quotas.
  • Relationship Building: Transition seamlessly from digital communication to direct, face-to-face consultative selling during scheduled travel.
  • Market Intelligence: Act as the "eyes and ears" on the ground; report on market trends, competitive pricing, and new industry developments to leadership.
  • Customer Retention: Proactively manage long-term relationships with established accounts to ensure loyalty and identify upselling opportunities.

Sales Operations & Fulfillment

  • Quote-to-Order Conversion: Prepare accurate quotes, verify customer specifications against current inventory, and process orders through the system.
  • Technical Verification: Thoroughly review customer requirements to ensure pricing accuracy and order fulfillment integrity.
  • Lead Handling: Professionally manage incoming calls, emails, and inquiries, converting prospects into active customers.
  • Follow-Up: Maintain a rigorous follow-up cadence on open quotes to capture feedback on pricing, quality, and delivery.

Internal Collaboration

  • Cross-Functional Sync: Coordinate with Warehouse and Operations teams to ensure delivery timelines and customer expectations are met.
  • Credit & Finance: Partner with the Credit Department to manage account statuses and payment terms.
  • Sales Support: Act as a bridge for dedicated outside reps (where applicable) by providing real-time data and account updates.

Travel & Presence

  • Estimated Travel: 25% – 40% travel required for direct engagement with prospective accounts and high-value stakeholders.
  • Structure: Primarily based from a home or main office with scheduled travel intervals.
  • Schedule: Expectation is in-office/available Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, unless otherwise scheduled for field travel.

Qualifications

  • Industry Knowledge: Strong knowledge of steel products and the steel industry.
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of experience in the metal industry (steel, aluminum, copper, stainless, etc.). Steel service center or mill experience is a plus.
  • Sales Aptitude: Proven track record of achieving or exceeding sales targets in both inside and outside environments.
  • Communication: Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to build rapport over the phone and in person.
  • Tech Savvy: Proficiency in CRM or other tracking software preferred; ability to manage high-volume quoting and order entry.
  • Location: Candidates preferably are from the Modesto area, but have been in sales in the surrounding regions & are familiar with the area/market. 
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field is beneficial but not required.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Pay: $60,000

  • Commission: Uncapped commission based on gross margin of sales.

  • Vehicle: Vehicle stipend provided for travel periods.
