The Opportunity 

Moment Energy is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead and scale our multidisciplinary engineering organization as we expand production of our battery energy storage systems. This role will oversee a growing team of approximately engineers across multiple disciplines.

As a key member of the engineering leadership team, the Director of Engineering will drive technical strategy, engineering execution, and team development while ensuring that our products move efficiently from design through certification and into scalable manufacturing. 

The ideal candidate combines strong technical leadership with operational execution, bringing experience scaling engineering teams, delivering complex hardware products, and collaborating cross-functionally with manufacturing, supply chain, product, and commercial teams.

Responsibilities and Duties

Engineering Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team across mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, battery systems, and test engineering.
  • Establish clear technical vision, engineering strategy, and development roadmaps aligned with company growth and product strategy.
  • Build scalable engineering processes, structures, and performance standards to support rapid company growth.
  • Foster a high-performance engineering culture focused on collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement. 
  • Plan, build, and hire new teams to take on new initiatives and scale the company. 
  • Lead motivated teams and individuals by demonstrating strong hands-on skills and the ability to break down full business objectives into strategies for teams.
  • Partner closely with executive leadership to align engineering priorities with business objectives.

Product Development & Technical Execution

  • Oversee the design and development of battery energy storage system (BESS) components and integrated systems, including battery enclosures, power electronics integration, thermal management systems, and structural components.
  • Guide system architecture decisions to ensure performance, reliability, manufacturability, and scalability.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration between hardware, firmware, and software teams to ensure seamless integration of systems.
  • Ensure engineering programs progress effectively from concept through prototyping, validation, certification, and production launch.
  • Support engineering efforts required for product safety and certification, including standards such as UL and other regulatory requirements.

Engineering Operations

  • Establish engineering development processes including design reviews, FMEA, documentation standards, and product lifecycle management.
  • Oversee creation and maintenance of key engineering documentation such as BOMs, manufacturing drawings, SOPs, design review materials, and technical specifications.
  • Implement metrics and reporting frameworks to track engineering progress, product quality, and team performance.
  • Work with program managers to set and achieve ambitious goals, track progress against timelines, make educated decisions with missing data, trade-off risks and compromises to meet deadlines. 
  • Collaborate with quality and regulatory teams to ensure compliance with industry and safety standards.

Supplier & External Collaboration

  • Partner with supply chain teams to evaluate and onboard new suppliers and engineering partners.
  • Support supplier technical evaluation and design collaboration to optimize cost, performance, and lead times.
  • Interface with customers and external stakeholders on technical requirements when needed.

 

The Candidate

We’re looking for individuals with the following traits, skills, and experiences:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering.
  • Must have a background in industries such as energy storage, power electronics, EV, robotics, or industrial systems.
  • 12+ years of experience in the design, development and launch of complex electro-mechanical or other relatable applications.
  • Proven experience launching new industrial products and scaling a concept through the prototyping, product development cycle, through to repeatable manufacturing.
  • Proven experience scaling engineering teams and processes in high-growth or startup environments.
  • Proven experience as a strong people leader, who loves working with teams, mentoring engineers, growing individuals and managers. 
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering, product lifecycle development, and certification processes.
  • Demonstrated understanding of UL1973, UL9540, UL9540A, NPFA 68 and 69 standards is preferred.
