â Our Legal team and you
Weâre looking for a Director to operate as the Group Legal lead for commercial contracts globally. Youâll be a strategic legal advisor to our Supplier Operations and wider leadership teams globally and help us build one of the best, most innovative banks in the world.
Youâll join Monzo Bank Limited (MBL) in a Group Centre role within our Legal & Board Governance Collective, which includes legal, company secretarial, sustainability and public policy teams. In this leadership role, youâll report to the Group Centre General Counsel to give first rate legal advice and commercial contract support to our UK, Europe and US businesses as we pursue our commercial objectives.
đ Youâll play a key role byâŚ
- Youâll be a trusted senior advisor providing legal advice and commercial insights supporting all of Monzoâs operating entities globally with their commercial contract needs.
- Youâll operate as a commercial contracts expert and strategic partner to Supplier Operations and will work proactively and collaboratively with our broader teams involved in contracting across the Monzo Group, including our Risk & Control teams.
- As an experienced leader of people, you'll be managing a team of highly-skilled contractors and helping mentor and support other lawyers across the wider team.
- Youâll develop and maintain standard contract templates, playbooks, and best practices to ensure consistency and speed. Youâll find areas to embed technology solutions to promote automation and appropriate self-service.
- Youâll own and develop our Contract Lifecycle Management strategy including embedding the use of AI and LLM systems.
- In particular, youâll:
- lead a panel of IT and outsourcing commercial contract experts (currently 9 contractors) which supports all Monzo entities globally.
- manage the demand into and delivery by the panel of first rate commercial contract services including expert drafting, review and negotiation of complex, high-value agreements with a particular focus on IT and outsourcing agreements, software licensing, SaaS, cloud services, and other technology-related contracts.
- manage panel recruitment, onboarding, work allocation, escalations and billing.
- deliver key insights and metrics relating to the flow of contract work through the panel, management of costs and progress in embedding automation.
- identify and assess legal and commercial risks within contracts and provide pragmatic, commercially focused advice to mitigate those risks.
- identify and help implement best practice in the mapping of key contractual obligations into business processes and controls.
- drive efficiency and innovation in our contracting process. This includes taking ownership of the legal elements of our existing contract lifecycle management process and championing the strategic use of existing technology to streamline workflows, enhance reporting, and reduce risk. Ideally, you will be familiar with Ironclad and Omnea platforms.
- be responsible for evaluating, implementing, and embedding new legal technology solutions.
- find ways to empower business teams to manage contracts and contractual risks/obligations, operating with appropriate frameworks and tools, optimising the value of contributions from the legal team.
- support the in-country entity General Counsels and their teams in providing legal and regulatory advice relating to outsourcing and other legal and regulatory issues relevant to commercial contracts in a financial services setting.
- support the Head of Technology, Data and Operations Legal in respect of the intra-group provision of services between Monzo group companies relating to use of its world class technology, data and product platform
- Youâll work with the General Counsel Group Centre, to identify and manage legal and regulatory risks relating to commercial contracts, partnerships and material outsourcings, ensure robust challenge and scrutiny of changes as they go through Monzoâs governance process and ensure that the businesses you support respond appropriately to new and changed legal and regulatory requirements.
- Youâll take responsibility for providing forward-looking guidance and insights on key legal and regulatory developments, risks, and opportunities relevant to commercial contracts, partnerships and outsourcing, thus helping positioning Monzo to thrive in a dynamic legal and regulatory environment.
- Youâll work with the Legal and Board Governance collective to champion new technology innovations to improve the productivity of the wider legal team, including through identifying suitable technology solutions to streamline workflows, optimise processes and work efficiencies, and increase scalability.
- As a senior leader and a member of the senior leadership team in the Collective, youâll take a lead on broader initiatives owned and managed by the Legal & Board Governance Collective to help grow and develop the teams and the services they provide.
- Youâll proactively manage relationships with external suppliers and law firms to enhance processes around budget and cost management to ensure we are optimising our spend and extracting best value while delivering top-quality legal support.
𤊠Weâd love to hear from you ifâŚ
- You are a technically excellent and experienced commercial contracts lawyer with deep expertise in a technology or financial services setting with a minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) in the UK.
- You are an expert in IT and outsourcing arrangements and have solid knowledge of ancillary areas impacting contracts, preferably in a financial services context, including material outsourcing, operational resilience, data protection, intellectual property and the use of AI / LLMs.
- You have experience advising on commercial contracts in multiple jurisdictions, particularly the UK, EU, and US. You understand the implications of cross-border agreements and data protection regulations (e.g. GDPR, CCPA).
- You have worked in house for a global technology company or technology-led financial services group, leading a commercial contract team with a secure understanding of how technology is utilised across the organisation. Alternatively, youâve advised these types of businesses in private practice but have significant experience of having worked in house in a fast paced growth organisation.
- You are comfortable working with and leading a team of highly engaged and experienced contractors.
- You have a proven track record of success in enhancing, modernising and scaling legal processes and systems. You have hands-on experience in utilising and embedding technology to improve the contract lifecycle, from initial request through to execution and renewal. Youâll be able to engage with credibility on technology developments and applications in this area with our Supplier Operations and wider executive teams helping to develop thought leadership.
- You have an ability to balance legal risk with commercial reality, providing advice that supports business objectives. Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills are a must. You are able to explain complex issues in a simple way.
- You are a strategic thinker. You look for innovative and agile ways of solving problems. You think ahead, anticipate relevant challenges, deeply understand the commercial objectives of the teams you support, set clear objectives, and find effective solutions. You quickly identify and independently implement mitigating actions.
- You are a strong communicator who can provide clear, precise, and practical legal advice, effectively articulating what is relevant and important in a concise manner. You can take a position on key issues, present persuasive recommendations, and constructively drive consensus at all levels, including the most senior level.
- You have outstanding interpersonal and team player skills and are experienced in working across a network of cross-functional stakeholders to collaboratively solve problems.
- You bring energy and presence and excel at building open, trusting relationships across all levels of the organisation, including the Board and C-suite levels, in global or international settings.
- You have excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritise and work effectively and independently under tight deadlines across multiple projects.
