⭐ Our Financial Crime Customer Operations Team: The Shield of Monzo

Our Financial Crime Customer Operations team is the frontline defence protecting Monzo and our customers from fraud, money laundering, and other financial crime. More than a compliance function, we safeguard the integrity of our business through robust investigations, risk management, and regulatory compliance.

We're looking for a FinCrime Business Banking – Acquiring Senior Investigator to conduct customer due diligence, assess financial crime risks, investigate suspicious activity, and ensure compliance with regulatory and payment industry requirements. You'll be a self-starter who can thrive in a fast-paced environment and make an impact from day one.

Within the FinCrime Business Banking Pillar, you'll help protect the full lifecycle of our business customers—from onboarding through ongoing monitoring—by identifying financial crime risks, investigating suspicious activity, and recommending appropriate controls, reporting, or account exits where needed.

🔑 You’ll play a key role by...

  • Conducting comprehensive KYB checks on new and existing customers, ensuring adherence to regulatory guidelines and internal policies
  • Reviewing customer documentation, including merchant applications, financial statements, legal agreements, and beneficial ownership information
  • Evaluating the adequacy and accuracy of customer-provided information and perform risk assessments based on established criteria
  • Investigating and resolve any red flags, inconsistencies, or suspicious activities identified during the customer due diligence process
  • Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, such as Compliance, Legal and Risk, as required, to obtain additional information or clarify discrepancies
  • Staying updated on evolving local and payment industry regulations, card scheme rules, and best practices to ensure compliance with applicable standards
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of customer due diligence activities, including audit trails, risk assessments, and supporting documentation
  • Assisting in the development and enhancement of KYB policies, procedures, and tools specific to the payments industry to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Providing training and support to other team members on KYB processes, industry requirements, and emerging trends
  • Reporting any potential cases of money laundering, fraud, or suspicious activities to the Financial Crime Risk Team and relevant authorities

💡 We’d love to hear from you if…

  • Subject Matter Expert/Knowledge of Merchant Acquiring/Payment merchant services or deep knowledge of card scheme rules and onboarding for card schemes
  • You have proven experience working in a KYC/B, AML, or compliance-related role within the payments industry or financial services sector
  • You thrive in a fast-paced environment and can adapt positively and quickly to change be it new guidance, evolving processes, or shifting priorities.
  • You maintain flexibility in the tasks you are scheduled for and can adapt seamlessly when business needs require changes at short notice.
  • Excellent analytical and investigative skills, with the ability to identify risks, analyse complex information, and make informed decisions

🎯 At the interview, we will be looking for you to demonstrate...

Essential Expertise

  • Significant and specific experience in conducting end-to-end due diligence (KYB) and investigations on businesses (SMEs, Corporates, etc.) in a regulated financial crime setting.
  • Proven ability to conduct in-depth, high-quality open-source research and analysis to corroborate customer profiles and transactional activity.
  • Strong foundational and applied Financial Crime knowledge, specifically deep exposure to Know Your Business (KYB) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) principles.
  • A strong understanding of current UK and international financial crime trends and acquiring  typologies, with particular expertise in those impacting acquiring (e.g. Structuring, shell merchants, Abuse of Merchant facilities, etc.)
  • A comprehensive understanding of the UK Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) regime, including consent requirements and the legislative framework (POCA).

➕ It will be useful, but not essential if...

  • You have direct experience of completing Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) and/or Complex Customer Reviews, and/or have experience writing and reviewing/approving SARs.
  • You can demonstrate a track record of identifying areas for control/process improvement and successfully working with, or escalating to, relevant stakeholders to implement change.

Our goal at Monzo is to make money work for everyone. To do that, working at Monzo must work for everyone. We want to create an equitable, engaged and innovative workplace which gives people from all backgrounds the support they need to thrive and grow.

Making Monzo work for everyone starts right at the beginning of every Monzonaut's journey: when they apply to work here. This demographic survey will help us better understand the people who apply to work at Monzo. It'll help us see how different groups progress through our hiring process, and where we need to make improvements to be more inclusive. If you choose to fill it out, all of the information you give us is:

  • Voluntary. And we've included a "prefer not to say" option for every question. It'd be helpful if you still fill out the survey even if you choose "prefer not to say" for every question, as it's useful for us to understand & record this. We won't know if you choose to fill this survey in or not.
  • Anonymous to Monzo. We can't tie your responses to you and they won't make a difference to the outcome of your application. We'll only use grouped responses for equal opportunities monitoring in our hiring process.
