R&D Mechanical Design Engineer

Lewisville

R&D Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Lewisville, TX
Department: Engineering
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role

The Mechanical Design Engineer plays a key role in the development, design, testing, and continuous improvement of Moonshot’s mission-critical power distribution products for the data center market.

This position is intended for an experienced mechanical engineer who can take ownership of complex engineering problems from concept through production. The engineer will develop mechanical systems and assemblies for low- and medium-voltage power distribution equipment while working closely with Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and external suppliers.

The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on mechanical design skills with practical manufacturing experience and an understanding of electrical power distribution equipment. This role will also provide technical leadership, mentor other engineers, and help establish scalable design practices as Moonshot continues to grow.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and development of low- and medium-voltage power distribution equipment, including panelboard, switchboard, and switchgear enclosures.
  • Translate customer specifications, electrical requirements, regulatory requirements, and manufacturing constraints into practical mechanical designs.
  • Develop concepts, 3D models, detailed drawings, assemblies, and complete manufacturing documentation using SolidWorks.
  • Own mechanical designs from concept and detailed design through prototype builds, testing, and production release.
  • Develop and maintain engineering bills of material, fabrication drawings, specifications, work instructions, and revision-controlled product documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical and controls engineers to integrate bus systems, circuit breakers, controls, metering, cable entry, grounding, and other electrical components into mechanical assemblies.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly principles to improve product quality, reduce cost, simplify assembly, and increase reuse of standard components.
  • Plan and run design verification and certification testing. Define test objectives, sample configurations, and acceptance criteria, and feed the results back into the design.
  • Support prototype and pilot builds, and work directly with manufacturing teams to resolve design, assembly, and quality issues.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis and develop corrective actions for product and manufacturing issues.
  • Create and manage engineering changes, redlines, deviations, and other product configuration documentation.
  • Work directly with suppliers and fabricators on sheet metal, machining, welding, forming, painting, gasketing, insulation, and related manufacturing processes.
  • Coordinate engineering deliverables and help establish priorities and schedules to support customer and production commitments.
  • Develop and improve engineering standards, design guidelines, calculation methods, documentation practices, and product development processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5–10 years of professional mechanical design experience in product development.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable 3D parametric CAD software.
  • Strong experience designing sheet-metal assemblies, structural frames, fabricated components, and mechanical enclosures.
  • Experience creating and releasing complete manufacturing documentation packages, including drawings, BOMs, specifications, and engineering changes.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently solve complex mechanical design and manufacturing problems.
  • Experience working directly with manufacturing personnel, suppliers, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Ability to read and interpret customer specifications, engineering drawings, electrical schematics, and applicable technical standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Design experience with LV switchboards and switchgear (UL 891 / UL 1558); experience with MV metal-enclosed or metal-clad switchgear (IEEE C37.20.2/.20.3) is a plus.
  • Experience with mission-critical or data center power infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with the standards that govern switchboard and switchgear construction, such as UL 891, UL 1558, IEEE C37.20.1/.20.2, UL 50/50E, UL 508A, and applicable NEC (NFPA 70) and NFPA 70E requirements.
  • Experience supporting UL certification, witness testing, and third-party laboratory testing.
  • Hands-on use of simulation software to guide design decisions, whether structural (seismic, lifting, short-circuit bracing), thermal/temperature-rise, or electromagnetic.
  • Experience developing modular or configurable product platforms for engineer-to-order manufacturing.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM or another engineering document/configuration management system.
  • Experience implementing design automation, CAD automation, or engineering workflow improvements.
