Principal Field Clinical Engineer
What is Motif?
Motif is a medical device startup based in Houston, Texas. We are designing and developing minimally invasive electronic solutions for serious mental health conditions. Powered by our patent-pending methods for wireless power and data transmission, our goal is to create the smallest implantable brain stimulator to treat people with mental health disorders.
We are an early-stage startup with funding from venture capital firms, grants, and private angel and founder investments.
Motif’s technology stack consists of a small implant that is wirelessly powered via magnetic fields from an external wearable transmitter, configured and controlled from a programming interface. It delivers novel stimulation therapy to cortical targets and will evolve to record biomarkers of symptoms, disease state, and therapy response.
Where are we going?
We are currently completing the development of our first minimally invasive neural stimulation system and preparing for future versions with additional functionality based on our platform technology.
About the Job
We are seeking candidates with a background in supporting complex medical technology in early stage clinical trials as a field clinical engineer. If you have a passion for working with cross functional teams to ensure the success of clinical trials, apply now to be part of our dedicated team. This role represents a unique opportunity to be very hands-on during the first feasibility trials in the emerging field of therapeutic BCI for mental health.

Does this sound like you?
Do you enjoy being hands on with new technology? Will you partner with engineering when that technology doesn’t always work perfectly the first timeHave you collected multimodal outcomes data to capture nuances of complex disease states? Can you transfer important field learnings into next gen systems via collaboration with R&D?
If yes to the above, then you may love working with Motif as it is being built by highly dedicated people with passion for neurotechnology, clinical product development, and putting the patient first. We are looking for people with the same energy who will thrive in a high growth - high autonomy environment.
In this role, you will:
- Support all phases of early stage clinical trial execution, including onboarding and activating sites, training sites on procedures and technology, and supporting implant and follow up sessions throughout the trials
- Synchronize closely with clinical trial site staff to coordinate patient flow through studies, including collection of key imaging and electrophysiology data relevant to endpoints
- Operate Motif Research Systems under the guidance of medical professionals at clinical trial sites
- Partner with Motif R&D to troubleshoot systems and collect field performance data from usage during studies
- Travel to study sites in the US and internationally (South America) to perform these activities
- Collaborate with the team on transferring learnings from early studies into future iterations of the product and feedback on future trial design and execution
- Participate in testing of research and future commercial product, bringing insight from field use and users to system and usability testing
To be considered, you will need:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, neuroscience, or a related field
- Minimum of 6 years of human clinical research experience, executing studies in an academic, industry, or healthcare setting
- Experience interacting with a clinical study site for scheduling, organization, or other logistical elements of trial execution
- Experience in regulated environments, including studies with IRB or IDE oversight, studies performed to a defined clinical protocol, and studies with monitored or audited data collection
- To be able to travel to our Houston, Texas office on a monthly basis
- To be able to travel (in US and international) or relocate internationally for 3-6 months to support early studies (up to 75% during study execution)
