Technical Field Engineer
Role Description
As our Technical Field Engineer, you will work across field deployments, installation quality assurance, equipment provisioning, and technical troubleshooting.
Your mission is to make sure what gets designed and shipped actually works in the real world.
You will support new installations remotely and on-site, validate the quality of work completed by installers and partners, troubleshoot deployment issues, provision and prepare equipment in the warehouse, and help bring customer systems online with Motion.cloud.
This is a hands-on technical role. You may spend one day configuring and testing gateways, routers, sensors, and other equipment in our warehouse, the next reviewing installation photos and commissioning data, and the next traveling to a customer site to troubleshoot a deployment that is not behaving as expected.
You will work closely with Network Engineering, Engineering, Project Management, Customer Success, installers, and customer teams to ensure that deployments meet Motion.cloud standards.
You are not expected to operate or maintain customer HVAC equipment. Instead, you will focus on the devices, connectivity, controls interfaces, and installation quality required to connect customer systems reliably to Motion.cloud.
Technical Requirements
1. Field & Installation Experience

Technical Field Experience: Experience installing, commissioning, supporting, or troubleshooting technical systems in customer environments.

Hands-On Troubleshooting: Comfortable diagnosing problems involving hardware, wiring, power, connectivity, configuration, or communications.

Installation Quality: Ability to inspect completed work and identify improper installation, configuration errors, poor workmanship, or deviations from design.

Technical Drawings: Comfortable reading installation drawings, wiring diagrams, network diagrams, equipment schedules, and technical documentation.

Field Tools: Comfortable using basic electrical and networking diagnostic tools as required during deployment and troubleshooting.
2. Networking & Connected Devices

Networking Fundamentals: Working knowledge of Ethernet, IP addressing, DHCP, DNS, Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity, and basic network troubleshooting.

Connected Hardware: Experience working with gateways, routers, sensors, controllers, antennas, or other connected devices.

Cellular Connectivity: Familiarity with cellular routers, SIMs, antennas, signal strength, and common LTE/5G connectivity issues.

Wireless Systems: Basic understanding of RF concepts including signal strength, interference, coverage, antenna placement, and building attenuation.

IoT Systems: Comfortable supporting distributed sensors and edge devices that communicate through gateways or network infrastructure.
3. Technical Execution & Documentation

Equipment Configuration: Ability to configure, provision, test, label, and document technical equipment before deployment.

Commissioning: Experience validating that installed equipment is online, communicating correctly, and meeting expected performance criteria.

Documentation: Ability to maintain accurate installation records, commissioning results, equipment inventories, and field notes.

Issue Escalation: Ability to clearly communicate technical findings and escalate problems with enough detail for Engineering or Network Engineering to act quickly.
Key Responsibilities
1. Installation Support & Commissioning

Deployment Support: Support customer installations remotely and on-site as required.

Installer Assistance: Provide technical guidance to installers and partners during deployment.

Commissioning: Validate installed devices, gateways, networking equipment, and controls interfaces before project handoff.

System Verification: Confirm equipment is powered, configured, connected, reporting data, and functioning as expected.

Troubleshooting: Diagnose installation problems involving hardware, wiring, power, communications, configuration, or network connectivity.

Field Resolution: Travel to customer sites when issues cannot be effectively resolved remotely.
-
Project Handoff: Help ensure deployments meet technical requirements before transitioning into ongoing operations.
2. Installation Quality Assurance

Installation Review: Review completed installations for compliance with Motion.cloud standards and project documentation.

Remote QA: Inspect photos, commissioning data, device status, network health, and other deployment evidence before approving work.

On-Site QA: Perform physical site inspections when necessary to validate workmanship and system configuration.

Standards Enforcement: Identify deviations from installation standards and coordinate corrective actions with installers or project teams.

Punch Lists: Create and track technical punch-list items through resolution.

Root Cause Feedback: Identify recurring installation problems and help improve deployment standards, installer instructions, and training.
3. Warehouse Provisioning & Equipment Preparation

Device Provisioning: Configure and provision gateways, routers, sensors, modems, and other equipment before shipment.

Bench Testing: Test equipment prior to deployment to confirm hardware and connectivity are functioning properly.

Configuration Management: Apply required firmware, network settings, credentials, identifiers, and site-specific configurations.

Kitting: Prepare deployment kits containing the correct equipment, accessories, antennas, cabling, labels, and documentation.

Inventory Accuracy: Maintain accurate records of equipment assignment, serial numbers, configuration, and deployment destination.

Quality Control: Verify equipment is complete, properly configured, labeled, and ready for installation before shipment.
4. Field Troubleshooting & Technical Escalation

Issue Diagnosis: Troubleshoot problems encountered during installation, commissioning, or early operation.

End-to-End Validation: Determine whether issues originate with the device, power, wiring, RF connection, gateway, local network, WAN connection, controls interface, or Motion.cloud.

Technical Escalation: Work with Network Engineering and Engineering when problems require deeper network, firmware, platform, or integration expertise.

Evidence Collection: Capture logs, photos, configurations, measurements, and other information needed to resolve technical problems efficiently.

Resolution Verification: Confirm corrective work fully resolves the issue before closing out field activities.
5. Controls & OT Connectivity

Controls Interfaces: Support connectivity to HVAC controls, building automation systems, meters, sensors, and other operational technology.

Connectivity Validation: Confirm that controls and field devices are communicating through the required gateways and network infrastructure.

Interface Troubleshooting: Assist in diagnosing communications issues involving controls networks and field interfaces.

Installer Coordination: Work with controls contractors and integrators when installation or connectivity issues involve their systems.

Scope Discipline: Focus on connectivity and installation rather than operation or maintenance of the underlying mechanical equipment.
6. Cross-Functional Collaboration

Network Engineering: Partner with Network Engineering on connectivity, cellular, LoRaWAN, RF, and network-related field issues.

Engineering: Provide detailed field information when product, firmware, or platform issues require engineering support.

Project Management: Communicate deployment status, installation issues, punch-list items, and field risks.

Customer Success: Provide technical context when customer communication or follow-up is required.
-
Installers & Partners: Serve as a technical resource for installers and help ensure work is completed to Motion.cloud standards.

Continuous Improvement: Feed field observations back into product design, deployment processes, installation standards, and documentation.

Low-Voltage Systems: Experience with low-voltage wiring, structured cabling, controls wiring, or related installation work.

Field Commissioning: Experience performing site acceptance testing, commissioning, or installation QA.

Technical Warehousing: Experience provisioning, staging, testing, or kitting equipment prior to field deployment.

Industrial / Building Environments: Experience working in data centers, commercial buildings, manufacturing facilities, utilities, or similar environments.
The Profile
You like making things work in the real world.
You are comfortable at a workbench configuring equipment, on a video call helping an installer troubleshoot a deployment, or standing in a mechanical room figuring out why a gateway that should be online is not communicating.
You notice the details that determine whether an installation will be reliable six months from now—not just whether it happens to work today.
When you review an installation, you look beyond a green status indicator. You want to know whether the equipment is mounted correctly, antennas are positioned properly, wiring is clean, devices are labeled, configurations are correct, and the installation matches the design.
You are methodical when troubleshooting. If something is offline, you work through the problem one layer at a time: power, hardware, wiring, RF, gateway, network, WAN connectivity, controls interface, and platform.
You are also comfortable knowing when a problem belongs to someone else. You can gather the right evidence and hand a networking issue to Network Engineering or a product issue to Engineering without losing context or slowing down resolution.
You communicate well with installers, engineers, project managers, and customers, but you are happiest when communication results in something concrete getting fixed, commissioned, or completed.
You take pride in quality. When a deployment is handed over, you want to know it was installed correctly, validated thoroughly, and built to last.
You are willing and able to travel to customer sites when hands-on support is the fastest or most effective way to solve the problem.
