The Opportunity

Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser, and Pocket, a service for keeping up with the best content online.

Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products each month, we’re shaping the next 25 years of technology. Our work focuses on diverse areas including AI, social media, security and more. And we’re doing this while never losing our focus on our core mission – to make the internet better for everyone.

The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission. Along with 60,000+ volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms.

The Security Engineering Team provides core security and privacy guarantees which allows individuals to safely browse the web using Firefox. Keeping that promise requires many layers of assurance which are encompassed within the Security Engineering Team. For this role in particular we are looking for a skilled low level engineer who can support our efforts in Communication Security, which entails the entire TLS stack, Network Security Services (NSS) and Personal Security Manager (PSM). Our team maintains all crypto relevant code in Firefox and hence you will be working on the core of the Firefox browser which fundamentally enables all secure communication between the client and the browser.

Mozilla isn’t just a great place to work. It’s an experience you’ll carry with you throughout your career! As part of our internship program, you’ll have the opportunity to be mentored one-on-one by somebody brilliant, to impact the projects you’ll collaborate on, and to never be bored. Ever! From the passionate people you’ll learn from, to the chances you’ll have to make the Web a better place, your time with Mozilla will be unlike any other.

Below is a small snapshot of the work we do to give you an idea about some of the big things you could do at Mozilla.

About The Team and Role

We strive to provide a secure browsing experience for all of our users. We not only maintain existing cryptographic primitives in NSS, the cryptographic library powering Firefox, but are also on the forefront of advancing the web through the evolution of relevant standards.

What You’ll Get To Do

  • Improve Firefox’s web browsing experience by maintaining and advancing the entire TLS stack, Firefox’s Personal Security Manager (PSM), and NSS (Network Security Services), the cryptographic library powering Firefox.
  • Design and implement new web platform features in collaboration with senior leaders and the web community.
  • Debug and fix platform-specific security problems in our multi-threaded codebase and improve Firefox’s stability and correctness.

What You Bring

  • Experience with programming in C/C++, or Rust and you’re familiar with the concept of memory safety and practices for secure software development.
  • You speak English fluently and enjoy conducting software engineering work in the open.
  • Previous experience with cryptography, compilers, operating system development or web security is a bonus!
  • You are enrolled in a university in Germany and are willing to occasionally visit our Office in Berlin
  • Commitment to our values:
    • Welcoming differences
    • Being relationship-minded
    • Practicing responsible participation
    • Having grit
