
Software Engineer II - Transaction Accuracy
As a talented Software Engineer II, you will deliver resilient and sustainable software projects from design to implementation and rollout. You will execute on defined projects to achieve team-level goals and own minor features in support of larger features. You will independently define the right solutions or use existing approaches to solve defined problems, consistently deliver high quality code, and contribute to test development.
The mission of the Transaction Accuracy team is to make sure our Payment Processing platform is handling every payment transaction accurately, and that we are always following the rules published by major credit card networks like Visa and Mastercard. We are responsible for converting the transactional data from the credit card networks into a common internal language that our teams can understand, and validating the quality and accuracy of our payment flows. The work we do has a high impact to our business and contributes to a delightful experience for our customers and their cardholders.
We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely anywhere within Vancouver, Canada or Ontario, Canada. We’d love for you to join us!
What You’ll Do
- Translate ideas into clear code that is well documented and well tested
- Read and navigate through a large code base and contribute to test development and bug fixing
- Decompose simple problems or business scenarios into solutions composed of multiple software components interacting with each other
- Participate in the core processes of the team such as agile ceremonies, code review sessions, and on-call rotations
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with cross-functional partners and teammates to get work done in a Flex-first environment
- Ask questions and proactively identify and advocate for ways to improve the current state of projects and processes
- Contribute to a positive sense of community on the team (eg by engaging in team-building activities), and mentorship of new hires, interns, or more junior engineers
What We’re Looking For
- Strong Computer Science fundamentals with 2+ years experience as a Backend Software Engineer
- Programming experience in an Object Oriented language like Java
- Ability to to develop and deliver clean, readable and error-free code with thorough documentation and testing
- Ability to understand existing designs and technology choices and make appropriate adjustments when necessary
- Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and respectful manner both verbally and in writing
- The ability to demonstrate humility, empathy, and to take constructive feedback positively
- A desire to grow in your career by continuously learning new technologies and developing expertise in the payments domain, and sharing ideas to help others grow and learn
- The capacity to work productively on cross-functional teams and take a collaborative, team oriented approach
Nice-To-Haves
- Experience with Payments or the FinTech space, ideally in any of the following:
- Experience with Card Network certifications including working with engineers from a card network (ideally major like Visa/Mastercard/Pulse/Discover/AMEX) or a card network simulator to validate a new feature or data field for an issuing or acquiring processor
- Working with binary ISO8583 data, "packing" a data structure to ISO and unpacking ISO to a data structure
- Normalizing unpacked (readable) ISO data across networks or to an internal system that makes it understandable to customers
- Experience w/ ISO data in a normalized format and its usage downstream. For example common fields used for tracing, settlement or useful to customers
- Experience with card transaction payment types (Purchase, Refund, AFT), their nuances and their expected impact on cardholders and the ledger
- Experience with AWS technologies
- Experience in end-to-end service ownership model including maintenance of infrastructure and familiarity with IaC technologies, CI/CD and observability tools (ie DataDog)

When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this position, reflected in CAD, is: 91,500 - 114,400.
