Staff Software Engineer - Developer Productivity and Engagement

As the Staff Engineer of the team, you will have the chance to shape, transform, and create an exceptional experience for engineers at Marqeta. You will identify, develop, and lead strategic investments to accelerate development iterations, enhance productivity and promote developer happiness. You will boost developers' productivity through the successful adoption of AI-driven tools, and drive engagement by onboarding and expanding a world-class engineering org through learning and knowledge sharing. The successful candidate is a strong thought leader in the developer productivity space and an experienced software developer. You are a self-starter who will drive projects and lead junior engineers to achieve desired outcomes.

The Impact You'll Make

  • Oversee the design, development, testing, deployment and craft of your team’s projects, ensuring the delivered solutions are highly relevant to developer productivity and happiness, something users cannot imagine life without. 
  • Promote and influence a data-driven culture across the organization. Use objective measurement as the primary means of communication, guiding project execution and decision making, and tracking progress.
  • Build relationships across Engineering. Conduct regular DevEx surveys within Marqeta, use developers' feedback to build and prioritize a strategy and roadmap for your team, and for products that may span multiple teams and the entire company.
  • Be able to articulate your projects, key results and product strategy in simple and clear narratives, easy to connect and comprehend by your team, the developer community and engineering leadership.  
  • Use your extensive technical expertise to mentor engineers, to promote developer productivity within your team and across Marqeta. 
  • Develop superior tooling and metrics to understand the health of our entire SDLC systems. Establish and foster a data-driven engineering culture.
  • Solve problems for engineers by understanding their needs and devising both tactical and strategic solutions. Effectively reduce and minimize development latency across key product lines and the entire engineering organization at Marqeta. 
  • Establish objective measurement of Inner and Outer Loop Latency, pinpoint areas of friction and waste across SDLC and propose solutions to minimize latency. Leverage established metrics for evaluation, progress tracking and insight.
  • To be successful, you need to be knowledgeable in a variety of technologies, tools and techniques:
    • For example: VS code or IntelliJ, IDE plugins for linting, type-checking, testing framework, Static code analyses, SonarQube, Soargraphy, AI-assisted code review, and unit test generation tools, pre- and post- commit testing pipelines.
  • Define DevEx survey questions and conduct DevEx surveys across the engineering organization in Marqeta, collect and analyze feedback and define areas of execution to achieve world-class developer experience for all Marqeta engineering teams.
  • Provide practical, reliable self-service tools and Gen-AI apps to the engineering team. Improve how engineers develop, share, review, and merge code through best practices, automated testing, infrastructure, and processes.
  • Work with developers to resolve their day-to-day issues, and direct junior engineers to build scalable and self-serviceable solutions to fix or mitigate these issues.

Who You Are 

  • 10+ years of solid programming experience in Java, Python, and C++ or similar programming languages to build large-scale distributed systems. 
  • Experience with developing developer infra and service, including development and code collaboration environments, CI/CD platforms, and measuring software development productivity and quality. Deep understanding of the SDLC and related build and test systems. 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to communicate technical strategy and roadmap in a clear, precise, and actionable manner, prior experience of creating and conducting new-hire training bootcamp with successful outcome.
  • Experience with build systems such as Gradle, Maven, Bazel, or Make, and familiarity with continuous integration and deployment tools such as CodeBuild, Jenkins, CircleCI or Github Actions
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana. 
  • Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, understanding of infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform and Ansible, experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure..

Nice-To-Have 

  • BA/BS Degree or higher in Computer Science or related technical discipline, or related practical experience

Compensation and Benefits

Marqeta is a Flex First company which allows you to choose your best working environment, whether that be from home or at a company office. To support Flex First, we calibrate pay to a competitive value according to working location. Compensation is aligned according to three tiers within the United States:

  • National: A baseline tier that applies to most of the geographic territory of the United States.
  • Premium: Slightly elevated from the National tier, and oriented toward a narrower set of higher cost-of-living areas, such as Los Angeles CA and Seattle WA
  • Premium Plus: A tier for the most expensive working areas, like the San Francisco Bay area and New York City.

When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this position is:

  • National: $165,300 - $206,600
  • Premium: $179,000 - $223,700
  • Premium Plus: $194,500 - 243,100
