We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Frontend with strong expertise in React Native to provide technical leadership in building our UX Toolkit (Web/Native) at Marqeta. This is a newly formed area of focus, and we need a technical leader with deep experience in building cross-platform mobile and web applications from the ground up.
We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely anywhere within the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia, Canada preferably you residing in either Greater Toronto Area or Metro Vancouver. We’d love for you to join us!
The Impact You'll Have
- Partner with product, design, and engineering leadership to shape and deliver innovative cardholder experiences across web and mobile platforms, aligning technical strategy with business goals.
- Lead the design and development of React Native SDKs and applications, establishing architectural patterns that enable scalability, modularity, and cross-platform consistency.
- Architect reusable and extensible React Native components that adhere to modern UI/UX patterns, accessibility standards, and internal design systems.
- Drive mobile performance optimization strategies, including lazy loading, rendering optimizations, and bundle size reduction, to ensure fast, responsive experiences.
- Contribute hands-on to complex front-end systems using React Native, TypeScript, and web technologies, while fostering engineering excellence through mentorship and code quality initiatives.
- Define technical roadmaps and author detailed design documents that align with long-term platform strategy, balancing velocity with maintainability.
- Lead engineering discussions, guide decision-making across teams, and champion best practices for mobile and web development to improve developer velocity and user experience.
Who You Are
- Over 8 years of experience in web and mobile application development, with deep expertise in architecting and delivering React Native solutions at scale.
- Demonstrated mastery of React Native, including advanced usage of React Navigation, Expo, and custom native modules in Swift, Kotlin, Objective-C, and Java.
- Proven ability to bridge React Native with complex native iOS and Android features, driving seamless integration across platforms.
- Strong architectural understanding of React.js and modern state management solutions (Redux, Context API, Zustand, etc.), with experience scaling apps with predictable state flows.
- Led the development and enforcement of design systems and modular component architectures to ensure consistency, reusability, and maintainability across large codebases.
- Deep knowledge of mobile performance optimization, including instrumentation, memory profiling, and rendering improvements.
- Extensive experience integrating RESTful and GraphQL APIs with scalable error handling, caching, and offline support patterns.
- Expertise in implementing secure mobile authentication flows using OAuth, biometrics, and encrypted storage for session handling.
- Designed and maintained CI/CD pipelines using tools like Fastlane, Bitrise, and App Center to support robust, automated mobile delivery workflows.
- Strong Git expertise and deep familiarity with scalable development workflows, including trunk-based development, code reviews, and release strategies.
- Track record of mentoring engineers, driving cross-team mobile strategy, and raising engineering quality through technical leadership.
- Exceptional debugging and cross-platform troubleshooting skills with a focus on improving app reliability and user experience.
- Strong communicator and collaborator, known for partnering effectively with design, product, and backend engineering to align on vision, tradeoffs, and execution.
Nice to haves
- Experience with Swift and/or Kotlin for deeper native integrations in React Native apps.
- Domain experience in Payments or Fintech industries.
- Familiarity with App Store and Google Play Store deployment processes, including code signing, release management, and A/B testing.
- Experience using TypeScript to enhance maintainability and scalability in React Native applications.
- Knowledge of WebAssembly, PWAs, or alternative approaches to cross-platform development.
- Passion for delivering high-quality, delightful user experiences with a customer-first mindset

When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this position, reflected in CAD, is $148,900 to $186,100
