Senior Software Engineer, Transaction Excellence

As  a talented Senior Software Engineer, you will own the delivery of high-impact projects that advance our team's strategic goals while maintaining exceptional quality standards. You'll leverage your software design expertise to decompose complex business problems into well-designed solutions with multiple interacting components. You will mentor and elevate less-experienced engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and leading by example.

The mission of the Transaction Excellence team is to ensure every change to our Core Transactions platform meets the highest standards of quality and reliability, fostering an engineering culture of confidence over fear. Through a comprehensive and layered testing methodology that spans functional and performance testing, we balance rapid product delivery with rigorous quality standards, strengthening customer trust and accelerating Marqeta's ability to enable strategic use cases.

We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely anywhere within Ontario or British Columbia, Canada. We’d love for you to join us!

The Impact You'll Have

  • Craft efficient, reusable code that solves complex problems independently
  • Design maintainable components with clear, testable APIs
  • Partner with stakeholders to resolve technical ambiguities, balancing details with the big picture
  • Engage in team processes including agile ceremonies, code reviews, and on-call rotations
  • Champion improvements to projects and processes
  • Foster team community and mentor junior engineers

Who You Are

  • Strong CS fundamentals with 5+ years backend engineering experience
  • Proficiency in Object-Oriented languages like Java
  • Ability to deliver clean, well-tested code with thorough documentation
  • Skill in evaluating and adapting existing designs and technology choices
  • Clear, concise communication skills both written and verbal
  • Receptiveness to feedback with demonstrated humility and empathy
  • Commitment to continuous learning in technology and payments domain expertise
  • Quality-focused mindset with testing and performance engineering experience
  • Collaborative approach to cross-functional teamwork

Nice to haves

  • Payments or FinTech experience
  • End-to-end service ownership experience including infrastructure maintenance, IaC, CI/CD, and observability tools like Datadog

Compensation and Benefits

When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this position, reflected in CAD,  is: 112,000 - 140,000
