Employment Counsel

As Marqeta’s Employment Counsel, you will partner with our People Experience team and leaders around the world to ensure Marqeta’s employment strategy, programs, and policies align with our company culture and values. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves, navigating complex employment issues with practical solutions, and shaping how we support and grow our teams. You’ll have the chance to work on a wide range of matters—from day-to-day counseling to policy design to supporting high-impact projects across Marqeta.

We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely anywhere within the United States.

The Impact You’ll Have

  • Advice with impact: Provide expert, business-focused advice on all stages of the employee lifecycle. 
  • Shape the employee experience: Partner with stakeholders to design and implement compliant policies, processes, and programs that align with Marqeta’s culture and corporate strategy.
  • Build resources: Draft, review, and update employment-related agreements, policies, playbooks, and procedures. 
  • Guide investigations: Lead or support internal investigations involving employee complaints or workplace misconduct.
  • Oversee claims strategically: Support and manage employment-related claims, litigation, administrative agency charges, and pre-litigation disputes.
  • Drive strategic change: Collaborate on major initiatives such as strategic reorganizations, global expansion, and acquisitions. 
  • Empower leaders: Deliver training that gives managers and stakeholders confidence in handling employment matters.
  • Stay ahead of change: Monitor employment law developments and share potential impact to the business and practice guidance with stakeholders. 
  • Grow beyond employment: Support other legal and regulatory matters of interest to broaden your skillset and make an even greater impact.

Who You Are

  • 5+ years of employment law experience, including counseling and litigation 
  • JD degree from an accredited law school and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a lean, high-performing environment
  • Adept at communicating complex topics in a clear and digestible way to stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to build strong relationships with cross-functional partners

Compensation and Benefits

Marqeta is a Flex First company which allows you to choose your best working environment, whether that be from home or at a company office. To support Flex First, we calibrate pay to a competitive value according to working location. Compensation is aligned according to three tiers within the United States:

  • National: A baseline tier that applies to most of the geographic territory of the United States.
  • Premium: Slightly elevated from the National tier, and oriented toward a narrower set of higher cost-of-living areas, such as Los Angeles CA and Seattle WA
  • Premium Plus: A tier for the most expensive working areas, like the San Francisco Bay area and New York City.

When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this position is:

  • National: $173,600 - $217,000
  • Premium: $187,900 - $234,900
  • Premium Plus: $204,200 - $255,300
