Senior Software Engineer - Credit

Toronto, Canada; Vancouver, Canada

As a Senior Software Engineer, on Marqeta’s Credit team you will play a pivotal role in shaping how credit is accessed, evaluated, and delivered at scale, directly impacting the financial lives of millions. At the senior level, you will independently identify and deliver software solutions on our Credit Rewards Team through a set of milestones spanning a specific product focus or a multi-component system. You will own and deliver projects in service of quarterly goals on the team and independently identify solutions to solve ambiguous, open-ended problems. You’ll partner across product, risk, data science, and compliance to build systems that are not only technically sound but ethically and financially responsible.

The Rewards Team in Credit Engineering is responsible for accurate and timely accrual and redemption of credit rewards. This is a high performing team working on the highest initiative project within Credit; the new rewards platform will allow our customers to customize every aspect of accrual, conversion, and redemption to match their loyalty goals.

At Marqeta, participation in a rotational on-call pager duty is a required part of the software engineering role. The specifics of the rotation may vary by team, depending on team size and structure, and will be discussed further during the interview process.

We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely anywhere within the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia, Canada with a preference to those residing in either the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) or Metro Vancouver. We’d love for you to join us!

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to create seamless experiences for customers earning and redeeming rewards
  • Build scalable, resilient services and APIs that power real-time rewards accrual and redemption across multiple channels
  • Mentor and guide engineerings through code reviews, architecture discussions, and best practices to raise the technical bar for the team
  • Leverage data and experimentation to optimize rewards programs, ensuring our credit customers get the most value from their experiences
  • Partner with stakeholders to translate business objectives into technical roadmaps, balancing innovation, maintainability, and speed to market - all while keeping customer needs at the forefront of decision making
  • Ability to lead design efforts for small to medium components/features while actively participating in larger design initiatives
  • Have the ability to have significant ownership of system components/features, driving their development and enhancement
  • Contribute to the long-term evolution of our credit platform through thoughtful technical strategy, system design and continuous improvement
  • Participate in our on-call rotation to ensure system reliability and rapid incident response

Who You Are

  • You’re fluent in your primary, modern programming language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python) and have a strong understanding of its ecosystem, patterns and best practices.
  • You can design and evolve large-scale systems with components that interact cleanly across APIs or service boundaries.
  • You’re comfortable working with modern engineering tooling and cloud platforms, ideally AWS, but you adapt quickly across cloud providers.
  • You’re adept at debugging complex, cross-system issues quickly and effectively, especially in distributed environments.
  • You care deeply about code quality, testing, and performance. You champion best practices across the engineering organization.
  • You’re comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities evolve and you can balance long-term architecture with short-term delivery needs.
  • You thrive in a collaborative environment and bring strong communication skills to cross-functional problem solving.
  • You’re passionate about building products that have a meaningful impact on users’ financial lives, and you take pride in delivering reliable, high-quality experiences.
  • You bring curiosity, empathy, and a growth mindset; you’re always seeking opportunities to help your team level up.
  • You have a track record of mentoring engineers and enjoy helping others level up through thoughtful feedback, pairing, and support.
  • You’re a strong communicator, able to clearly and respectfully convey technical and strategic ideas to engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders.
  • You navigate ambiguity well and can make informed technical trade-offs that balance long-term scalability with immediate delivery needs.
