Digital Data Archiving Systems Engineer

About The Role:

We are seeking an experienced Digital Data Archiving Systems Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and management of a multi-tiered data storage and backup strategy. This critical role involves working closely with our post-production team to develop workflows for archiving, automating data movement, and ensuring long-term storage reliability and accessibility. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of data storage technologies, backup solutions, and system automation, combined with a strong background in IT systems and networking.

 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Data Storage Strategy Development:
    • Design and implement a multi-tier data storage system that transitions raw
      video footage from high-cost primary storage to secondary and tertiary
      storage tiers.
    • Evaluate and recommend cost-effective storage solutions, including
      storage on prem solutions, cloud services and LTO tape systems.
  • Automation and Workflow Optimization:
    • Develop automation tools and scripts to streamline the transfer of data
      across storage tiers.
    • Collaborate with the post-production team to integrate automated
      workflows that align with content creation timelines and requirements.
  • Backup and Archival Solutions:
    • Establish a reliable backup strategy that ensures the safety and
      redundancy of all video content.
    • Implement and manage archival systems to maintain accessibility and
      compliance with data retention policies.
  • System Integration and Maintenance:
    • Oversee the integration of storage systems with existing IT infrastructure,
      ensuring seamless operation.
    • Monitor storage performance metrics and capacity, performing upgrades
      or optimizations as necessary.
    • Proactively address potential issues
    • Develop and execute strategies to enhance the reliability and efficiency of
      our post production lifecycle
  • Collaboration and Training:
    • Work closely with post-production and IT teams to ensure alignment on
      storage needs and workflows.
  • Provide training and support to staff on storage and archival processes.
    • Work with our network management team to optimize our network setting
      to support our video editing operations. Monitor and analyze network
      traffic to identify packet loss and latency issues. Work with the broader IT
      organization to implement network performance improvements.
    • Develop new capabilities by working with the team to test and integrate
      new technologies, features and workflows
    • Continues improvements by staying up to date with the latest
      developments in video processing technologies and archiving methods.
    • Recommend and complement enhancements to ensure our storage
      systems remain on the cutting-edge and highly function.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain detailed documentation of the storage architecture, workflows,
      and policies.
    • Generate regular reports on storage usage, performance, and system
      health.


What we're looking for:

  • Extensive Experience in post-production workflow: Demonstrated expertise
    in managing and processing video streams, with a strong understanding of
    various video standards, formats, tools, and software. (live streaming and
    broadcasting is a plus)
  • Hardware Proficiency: Hands-on experience with servers, fiber cables,
    switches, video hardware, PC’s and Mac peripherals.
  • Network Management: Proven experience in network configuration, packet
    analysis, and performance optimization.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify potential issues early and develop
    effective solutions. Experience setting up and managing monitoring and reporting
    systems for video archiving.
  • Innovation and Development: Experience in developing and implementing new
    capabilities in video archiving, such as transcription, translation, or other
    enhancements that improve the utility of archived video content.
  • Attention to Detail: Highly organized and meticulous.
  • Team Collaboration: Excellent communication skills and a collaborative
    mindset, with the ability to work closely with other team members and
    stakeholders to achieve project goals.
  • Proactive Attitude: A proactive approach to improving processes and systems,
    with a focus on making our services more reliable and efficient.


Qualifications:

  • Experience in video production or post-production workflows.
  • Knowledge of file formats and codecs commonly used in media production.
  • Certification in relevant technologies (e.g., AWS, CompTIA Storage+, or
    equivalent).
  • Proven experience in managing data storage and archival systems, preferably in
    a media or video production environment.
  • Expertise in storage server technologies, including SNS EVO or similar systems.
  • Familiarity with cloud storage platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and
    tape backup systems (e.g., LTO).
  • Strong knowledge of IT systems, including networking, servers, and data
    management.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools (e.g., Python, Javascript, Bash).
  • Familiarity with container technologies (e.g., Docker)
  • Familiarity with machine learning and AI-driven video processing tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving and project management skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
