Software Engineering Manager, Information Systems
About the role
Muon seeks a Software Engineering Manager to join our Information Systems team and lead its software engineering group. The ideal candidate is a hands-on people leader who has built and run a high-performing full-stack team that delivers mission-critical internal software and platforms, with a relentless focus on eliminating manual and repetitive work across the company.
The Information Systems team owns the comprehensive suite of custom software, vendor software, data platforms and automated tools that will enable various teams to work more rapidly, our factories to build efficiently, and our launch teams to operate flawlessly. You will hire and grow the engineers who build these systems, set the technical bar, and partner with Product Management and business stakeholders to turn the Information Systems roadmap into reliable, well-adopted software. This is a player-coach role: you will spend a meaningful share of your time designing, reviewing and building alongside the team.
This position is hybrid and requires working on-site in our San Jose, CA office three days per week.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor and grow a team of full-stack software engineers building Muon's internal software, platforms and integrations. Own the full employee lifecycle, from hiring and onboarding through development and performance management.
- Recruit and plan for an organization that will scale to meet the demands of the business as it grows; own workforce planning and resourcing across concurrent efforts.
- Be the driving force behind a technically excellent team by setting high standards for code quality, design review, testing, security and operational reliability.
- Partner with the Information Systems Product Manager and stakeholders across Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Finance and Mission Operations to translate the roadmap into team goals, plans and delivery commitments. Communicate these goals inward and outward.
- Own end-to-end delivery of internal software, from product concept through deployment, adoption and ongoing support for our internal customers.
- Stay hands-on: contribute to architecture, technology selection and code review, and step into implementation when the team needs it.
- Guide buy-vs-build decisions and lead the engineering side of integrating core systems (e.g., ERP, PLM, MES, Supply Chain) so data flows and handoffs between functions are automated.
- Identify and implement processes, tooling and infrastructure (CI/CD, observability, AI-assisted development) that speed up the team's design and delivery.
- Create an inclusive, collaborative, team-oriented culture that fosters high productivity and opportunities for growth.
Qualifications
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience
- 8+ years experience on high-performing software teams, including significant full-stack (frontend and backend) development
- 3+ years direct management experience of software engineers, with a demonstrated ability to build and drive a high-performing team while staying hands-on
- Experience owning complex software systems from design through production, ideally internal tools, enterprise software or business systems
- Proficiency in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript, modern frontend frameworks such as React, relational databases such as PostgreSQL, and REST/GraphQL API design
- Experience building and executing on technical roadmaps with cross-functional stakeholders
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Excited to work in a fast-paced environment with new challenges each week
Nice-to-have Skills
- Experience integrating with or extending enterprise platforms such as ERP (e.g., SAP S/4HANA), PLM, MES, HRIS or ATS
- Experience with cloud platforms (Google Cloud preferred), containerized deployments and infrastructure-as-code
- Experience delivering software in export-controlled or compliance-driven environments
- Experience applying AI/ML to automate business workflows
- Modern space systems or hardware-manufacturing experience
- Proven success in a high-growth startup environment
Salary
The salary range for this role is $196,000 - $217,000, plus a competitive equity grant and comprehensive benefits package. Final compensation will be determined based on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location as assessed during the interview process.
