Mechanical Engineer

Cambridge, MA

Nanopath is developing a first-in-class in vitro diagnostics platform to transform how diseases are diagnosed. We aim to replace lengthy molecular testing workflows by bringing rapid, high-quality diagnostics closer to the patient. Our mission is to improve patient outcomes – starting with women – through a purpose-built platform that delivers actionable results within a single office visit.

The company is headquartered at The Engine, the premier tough technology incubator in the Kendall Square ecosystem. We are collectively committed to health equity and the design of solutions for underserved populations and low-resource settings. Corporate sustainability – both environmental and social – is at the forefront of our decision making.

About the Role

  • Support the mechanical design, development, and testing of Nanopath's point-of-care molecular diagnostic reader platform.
  • Design, source, build, and test mechanical assemblies and mechanisms, including their interactions with the fluidic cartridge and onboard chemistry.
  • Develop mechanisms supporting cartridge engagement, fluid actuation, and instrument motion, with attention to reliability and manufacturability.
  • Design, build, and test systems from prototype through commercial module verification.
  • Support component sourcing and collaborate with vendors and contract manufacturers on custom and off-the-shelf parts.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (systems, electrical, software, assay) to define requirements and ensure robust cartridge-to-instrument integration.
  • Execute design controls and design verification testing, and maintain documentation in compliance with ISO 13485.

Technical Qualifications

  • Experience designing mechanisms and mechanical assemblies, ideally in a regulated environment.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and application of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes relevant to mechanisms and assemblies (machining, 3D printing, injection molding, casting, extrusion) with a focus on design for manufacturability and affordability.
  • Experience executing ISO 13485 design controls, including design verification testing of module level designs.
  • Understanding of fluidic systems and the mechanical interactions between an instrument and a consumable cartridge is a plus.
  • Experience with human factors engineering or industrial design for healthcare settings is a plus.

General Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline with at least 3 years of industry experience.
  • Ability to work on-site in Cambridge, MA.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, highly organized with demonstrated curiosity, scientific rigor and creative problem-solving.
  • Proactive self-starter with eagerness to adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.
  • Passion for technology translation and willingness to shape Nanopath’s future.
