Position Description: 

The Custodian plays a crucial role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout the zoo. This position is responsible for ensuring that all buildings, viewing areas, and visitor pathways remain in excellent condition by performing a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Regularly clean and sanitize zoo buildings, restrooms, office spaces, and common areas to ensure high hygiene standards.

      • Maintain clear, spotless viewing windows for animal exhibits, enhancing the visitor experience.

      • Clean and maintain signs throughout the zoo, ensuring readability and a polished appearance.

      • Remove litter and debris from walkways, seating areas, and public spaces to keep the zoo tidy and inviting.

      • Conduct routine inspections of assigned areas, promptly addressing cleanliness and minor maintenance concerns.

      • Assist with event preparation by setting up tables, chairs, decorations, and equipment according to event requirements.

      • Handle post-event cleanup, including dismantling setups, disposing of waste, and restoring areas to their original condition.

      • Collaborate with other zoo staff to ensure cleaning efforts align with conservation and sustainability goals.

      • Follow all health and safety protocols, including the proper handling of cleaning supplies and equipment.

      • Provide courteous assistance to visitors when needed, contributing to a positive guest experience.

 

Qualifications

Skills:

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to properly operate and maintain custodial equipment.
  • Ability to interact professionally with both staff and visitors.
  • Ability to prepare inventory usage reports, daily time sheets etc.
  • Ability to perform non housekeeping tasks requiring unskilled or semi-skill levels.

 

Education/ Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Minimum High School diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. 
  • Prior janitorial, custodial and/or general housekeeping experience is a plus.

 

Physical Responsibilities:

  • Working conditions may involve being outside. Must be able to work outside year-round in inclement weather such as extreme high/low temperatures, snow and rain conditions. 
  • Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift. Applicants are required to have the ability to bend, stoop and extend oneself etc., as required for performing assigned tasks. 
  • Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds without assistance.

 

Work Schedule:

Currently looking to fill 2nd shift: 11am to 8pm.

Work schedule may include early or late start times and working weekends and holidays as required to meet the zoo’s operating needs.

Full-time position, averaging 40 hours per week.

Flexibility:

Position may require flexibility in working hours to accommodate special events, emergencies, or animal care needs.
