INTRO TO POSITION

Millions of listeners depend on Morning Edition and Up First to set the news agenda as they start their days. We deliver the latest national and international news stories paired with analysis to put headlines into context. Morning Edition hosts conduct in-depth  interviews with the government officials and decision makers who make and influence the policies that affect people's lives. The show also features stories about music, movies and books that provoke thoughtful conversations about who we are in this world.

The right candidate for this position is committed to daily and breaking news and is eager to evolve the show’s rundown throughout the afternoon and evening to bring the freshest, most important stories to our listeners. They put the needs and wants of audiences first. And they believe in the mission of public media.

As our afternoon/evening Supervising Editor/Producer, you will join a small team of managers who collaboratively lead our news coverage of events in the U.S. and around the world. You will ensure the show is at the leading edge of the smartest conversations across a range of issues. Duties for this position include managing a team of producers and editors; updating the show’s rundown;  leading a daily editorial meeting; working with news desks to cover breaking news; assigning  duties to show producers, editors and hosts;  editing radio scripts and digital stories; framing stories and helping staff shape them; brainstorming story and segment ideas for the show; managing content creation and coordinating with other editorial NPR staff and helping to program the radio show and podcast.

This position leads the show through the afternoon and evening, handing off to our overnight team. The Supervising Editor/Producer is expected to work a shift scheduled from approximately 4 p.m.. to 12:30 a.m. EST Sunday through Thursday. However, it should be noted that, like other staff on Morning Edition, this position sometimes requires filling in on other shifts throughout the day as needed, including on holidays. In addition, as a manager, you will be assigned direct reports and are expected to evaluate and develop the team.

This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.    

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrated excellence in framing and editing stories for various platforms, including broadcast, podcast and digital coverage
  • Deliver editorial excellence by exercising strong news judgment to make quick but insightful decisions about story coverage and presentation
  • Plan and execute breaking news coverage plans for show production and programming
  • Help plan, coordinate and maintain staff schedules
  • Provide written and verbal editorial feedback to staff 
  • Develop and manage staff performance evaluations
  • Collaborate with digital news teams to maximize show content across platforms
  • Participate in the hiring of individual staff
  • Conduct outreach and represent the show in public forums
  • Cultivate, promote and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in one’s work and in the workplace
  • Demonstrated awareness of intersectional identities and ability to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 3 years experience managing direct reports in a journalism newsroom or operation
  • At least 7 years experience creating journalism content as an editor or producer

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience producing radio broadcast content, especially for public media 
  • Experience producing television and digital news content 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, or writing-intensive discipline and/or equivalent work experience.

WORK LOCATION

  • Hybrid Permitted: This is a hybrid permitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at the Washington, DC  or Culver City, California office at least 10 days per year. 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated skill in news-writing techniques for varied formats such as feature stories, web stories, guest interviews, 
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in writing and editing news copy for varied platforms including broadcast, podcast, mobile, web, newsletters and other digital platforms, especially during breaking news situations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and familiarity with web producing, podcast planning and/or social media platforms
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills for coordinating and disseminating information about news coverage plans.
  • Clear and respectful communication skills with experience in using them under deadline pressure.
  • Understanding of journalistic ethics, editorial process and standards.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
  • Experience in maintaining editorial standards
  • Proficiency in project management such as managing deadlines and time management
  • Experience in people management skills such as delivering constructive feedback, clear communication and conflict resolution.

JOB TYPE

  • This is a full time, exempt position.

COMPENSATION

Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $145,000-155,000 a year plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

Benefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR’s benefits options.
