
Deputy Chief Technology Officer (Aerospace Startup)
At Near Space Labs we design, build and operate a fleet of stratospheric robots to image the Earth. We launch our proprietary, balloon-based imaging robots to heights between 40,000 and 60,000 feet. From this vantage point, we capture petabytes of imagery for a variety of use cases.
We are looking for a highly versatile and resourceful deputy CTO, to handle critical cross-functional projects and workstreams, implement processes between engineering teams, and help scale the entire organization. This position works directly to the CTO and has visibility of the whole engineering organization.
Your responsibilities will be to:
- Lead cross-team taskforces on key projects and troubleshooting efforts;
- Lead and/or support the hiring of multiple technical roles;
- Design processes and communication channels between multiple engineering teams;
- Build workflows with tools like Airtable and JIRA;
- Design new teams and parts of the engineering organization and stand them up quickly;
- Support the CTO in tasks connected to product discovery, user needs and long-term product development;
- Collaborate with the CTO and engineering leads to define and execute on key technical priorities, ensuring smooth execution and delivery;
- As needed, support the writing of tenders and proposals.
Location
This is a position for EU nationals or work permit holders based in Barcelona. Remote work possible once a week.
Your Skills
- Engineering Degree;
- 5+ years of experience in a hands-on, individual contributor engineering role, preferably if in aerospace, robotics or IoT companies;
- 5+ years experience in a technical project management role or similar;
- Experience hiring technical staff;
- People management experience preferred but not required;
- Familiarity with startup environments;
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and in a team;
- Excellent at decision making under uncertainty, risk management and systemic thinking;
- Orientation to deliver results to the business and the customers irrespective of the technical solution used.
