Senior Mechanical Engineer, Fluidics & Disposables
Neptune Medical is an innovative, venture capital funded medical device startup headquartered in Burlingame, CA. We have already commercialized novel medical devices using our technology. Now the team Triton Robotics at Neptune is building something truly unique: a fully flexible medical robot that enables doctors to reach deep into human anatomy. Triton Robotic Endoscopy will disrupt flexible endoscopy and set a new standard in outcomes for decades to come.
TITLE: Senior Mechanical Engineer, Fluidics & Disposables
POSITION SUMMARY:
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will fill a critical role on the Robotics Hardware Team. Joining a talented team of engineers, you will be responsible for fluidics, drapes and other disposables for our groundbreaking flexible endoscopy robotic platform. Design and development for these devices require a delicate balance of design ingenuity, functional performance, and cost tradeoff. You will work closely with other design engineers to architect and integrate the fluidics lines and drapes – determining material selection, define placement with workflow in-mind, specify dimensions and other attributes to ensure performant design that meets cost targets. You will be responsible for the full engineering lifecycle including requirements, prototyping, test, verification, ultimate productization including packaging, labeling, sterilization. You will work with contract manufacturing partners to scale production while maintaining product quality and meeting cost-of-goods targets.
The ideal candidate will act with passion and intensity in a medical device start-up that is fast paced and collaborative and will display the ability to perform to the requirements outlined below. For the right person, this position will be a tremendously exciting and career-defining opportunity, making core contributions to a genuinely new and unique type of medical robotic platform.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Own all aspects of design and implementation of fluidics and drapes for the capital robotic system.
- Engage in cross functional collaboration with other teams to generate elegant solutions to meet clinician needs and performance requirements.
- Design and own packaging, labeling, sterilization for the instruments and accessories.
- Select and develop appropriate suppliers to produce high quality products at cost targets.
- Produce drawings and other design outputs to communicate design specifications to vendors, including tooling as required for test or production.
- Own definition of requirements, test method development, risk analysis, and design verification of the above.
- Lead technical design reviews. Present design inputs, design outputs and open issues.
- Work closely with colleagues to brainstorm, collaborate, and share knowledge, demonstrating a team forward mentality with honest work ethic.
- Generate novel ideas that strengthen the company’s intellectual property position in the fields of endoscopic robotics and minimally invasive surgery.
- Work effectively within the confines of a regulated, quality-system driven, FDA-monitored medical device environment. Supporting and performing necessary testing and report generation for regulatory and clinical submissions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of work experience as a hand-on designer in medical devices, fluidics or pneumatic systems, draping, packaging, sterilization or related disposable devices. Will consider 2+ years of work experience for Engineer II level candidates.
- Demonstrated experience working with cross functional teams.
- Experience in design control, risk management, demonstrating an ability to assess design failures and mitigate them through novel approaches.
- Demonstrated ability to be successful in supporting multiple sub-projects concurrently, juggling multiple priorities based on criticality of the project deliverables.
- An inventive aptitude balanced with discipline and detail-orientation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with medical device design and manufacturing.
- Great understanding of design controls and what is needed to get a product into patients.
- Experience with sterilization and sterilization validation.
- Experience with risk analysis, risk mitigation and dFMEA practices.
- Demonstrated ability to generate original ideas by history of patents and IP.
- Developed products from invention to market release.
- Experience in a start-up environment.
- Experience creating and managing schedules, budgets, and plans.
