Senior Software Engineer

Torrance, California, United States

Who we are

Neros is a defense technology company rebuilding America’s drone industrial base. We design and manufacture high-performance unmanned systems that are tested in combat, iterated at startup speed, and built at massive scale. Our team culture is fast, hands-on, and obsessed with closing the gap between design and deployment.

As drones transform the character of warfare, Neros is delivering the systems the West needs to compete on the modern battlefield and deter the adversaries of democracy. We’re hiring engineers, operators, and builders who want to move fast, take on extreme ownership, and get capability into the hands of warfighters in months, not years.

What you will be doing

Neros builds drones for the modern battlefield. As a Senior Software Engineer on our Application team, you will build the tools and integrations our operators and engineers rely on. Mission planning and control software, desktop tools, and the connections between our systems and external command & control and situational awareness systems. You'll own major pieces end to end, from design to production software that keeps working when the network drops or the systems around it change.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain applications and integrations for operators and engineers — mission planning and control, configuration and monitoring tools, and connections to external command-and-control and situational-awareness systems
  • Build cross-platform desktop and web applications (Windows, Mac, Linux)
  • Own the interfaces your software depends on — data models, APIs, and external specifications that are incomplete or changing
  • Design software that behaves correctly when connectivity is intermittent or unavailable
  • Build test harnesses and simulators to verify software without access to live partner systems or hardware
  • Write unit and integration tests for your software, partnering with our test organization on system and field testing

You should have the following

  • 7+ years of experience designing, building and deploying production software
  • Deep expertise in TypeScript, Python, Go, Rust or another modern application language
  • Track record owning significant software end to end — from design to production, and after launch
  • Application experience — cross-platform desktop (Electron, Qt, or similar) or modern web shipped to real users
  • Solid networking fundamentals — TCP/UDP, message framing and serialization, and designing for unreliable or high-latency links
  • Experience working through interfaces you didn't control — protocols, message formats, and APIs owned by another team or organization
  • Experience building test harnesses or simulators for systems you couldn't test against directly

Nice to have

  • Production experience in more than one language is a strong plus
  • TAK ecosystem — ATAK plugins (Java/Kotlin), WinTAK plugins (C#), TAK Server, Cursor on Target
  • MAVLink or other drone/robotics protocols
  • Military or defense C2 or situational-awareness systems
  • Geospatial and mapping — coordinate systems, datums, and map rendering
  • Real-time operator interfaces — live telemetry, video, and many-vehicle displays
  • Embedded or device-facing software — applications that talk directly to hardware
  • Android development
  • You fly — FPV, RC, or drones generally

US Salary Range

$180,000 – $252,000 USD

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only. Actual salary may vary based on (but not limited to) work experience, education and/or training, critical skills, and/or business considerations. Highly competitive equity grants are considered part of Neros' total compensation package.

We’re an equal opportunity employer. We welcome all applicants without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.

Neros posts external titles (e.g., "Engineer II," "Senior I") to reflect true leveling and compensation, but internal titles never include level numbers — your internal title will be the base title only ("Engineer" or "Senior Engineer," as applicable).
