Senior Electrical Engineer II, Power & Propulsion

Torrance, California, United States

Who we are

Neros is a defense technology company rebuilding America’s drone industrial base. We design and manufacture high-performance unmanned systems that are tested in combat, iterated at startup speed, and built at massive scale. Our team culture is fast, hands-on, and obsessed with closing the gap between design and deployment.

As drones transform the character of warfare, Neros is delivering the systems the West needs to compete on the modern battlefield and deter the adversaries of democracy. We’re hiring engineers, operators, and builders who want to move fast, take on extreme ownership, and get capability into the hands of warfighters in months, not years.

What you will be doing

As a Senior Electrical Engineer II, Power & Propulsion at Neros, you will own the power and propulsion hardware for our next generation of autonomous and interceptor drones, including electronic speed controllers (ESCs), power conversion, and distribution. You will set the power architecture and design standards for new products across multiple product lines, and stay hands-on from schematic and PCB layout through bring-up, flight test, and production. You will also help build and lead the team that delivers them.

Responsibilities

  • Architect power supply and distribution systems for new drones and ground equipment, from battery input protection through point-of-load regulation
  • Lead ESC development, including three-phase power stages, gate drive, current sensing, protection, and integration with motor-control firmware
  • Build and lead the team that develops battery packs, BMS, and a Neros battery charging platform, including pack interfaces, cell protection, monitoring, and charge profiles
  • Establish design standards for the team, including derating, power integrity, design reviews, and validation coverage
  • Remain hands-on in schematic capture, PCB layout review, board bring-up, characterization, and flight test through production release
  • Hire, mentor, and lead a team of electrical engineers to execute on Neros’ new product development roadmap

You should have the following

  • 8+ years of experience in electrical hardware engineering, including ownership of power conversion hardware from concept through production
  • Experience leading engineers as a technical lead, project lead, or people manager, with direct involvement in interviewing and hiring
  • Power stage design experience, including high-current switching converters, gate drive, protection circuits, and FET and magnetics selection
  • Strong power integrity fundamentals, including control loop stability, transient response, decoupling and PDN design, and high-current layout
  • Hands-on PCB design experience, including schematic capture and layout of high-current, mixed-signal boards in Altium or a comparable ECAD tool
  • Mixed-signal and embedded design experience, including microcontroller-based designs
  • Board bring-up and characterization using oscilloscopes, current probes, loop analyzers, electronic loads, and power analyzers
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field

Nice to have

  • ESC or motor-drive design for BLDC or PMSM motors, including six-step and field-oriented control (FOC)
  • Working knowledge of lithium battery packs, including cell protection, BMS, and charging
  • People management experience, including performance reviews and career development
  • EMC and environmental qualification experience, including MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-810
  • UAV, eVTOL, aerospace, or robotics hardware taken through a production ramp with a contract manufacturer

US Salary Range

$225,000 - $315,000 USD

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only. Actual salary may vary based on (but not limited to) work experience, education and/or training, critical skills, and/or business considerations. Highly competitive equity grants are considered part of Neros' total compensation package.

We’re an equal opportunity employer. We welcome all applicants without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.

Neros posts external titles (e.g., "Engineer II," "Senior I") to reflect true leveling and compensation, but internal titles don't include level numbers — your internal title will be the base title only ("Engineer" or "Senior Engineer," as applicable).
