3D Art and Ceramics Teacher
Position Summary
Newark Academy seeks a creative, inspiring 3-D Art and Ceramics teacher to join the Arts Department for the 2025-2026 school year. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching ceramics and other 3-D art, a passion for working with middle school and upper school students and a desire to participate fully in our school community. Working with a wide range of students offers the opportunity to build a program by engaging younger learners and progressing to Advanced or International Baccalaureate level courses in the junior and senior years. The Teiger Gallery offers students the opportunity to showcase their work throughout the school year, as well as engage with professional artists who not only exhibit their work but also share their knowledge in the form of gallery talks and residencies.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience teaching 3D Art and Ceramics with an approach that presents ceramics as both a craft and a fine art, creating an environment that offers students the freedom to express their emotions, ideas and creativity so they develop skills and their own artistic voice
- Designing and facilitating hands-on ceramic projects that encourage creativity, problem-solving, technical skills and an appreciation of aesthetics
- Understanding of clay preparation, hand-building, wheel-throwing, glazing and firing
- The ability to present demonstrations using a variety of techniques
- Some knowledge and experience in painting and drawing
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Fine Arts is preferred
- Experience working with and supporting a diverse community of students, parents and colleagues
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Experience working in independent schools is preferred but not required
- Experience with International Baccalaureate (IB) is preferred, but we will provide this professional development for a highly skilled candidate who may not yet be trained in the IB guidelines
- Professionals in related fields or with non-traditional paths to education are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities include:
- Teach five sections of art, which would include sections of middle school 3-D Art and upper school ceramics
- Prepare and deliver meaningful lessons to students
- Provide timely feedback and guidance as student work develops and assess students' progress and learning outcomes
- Manage the classroom environment, ensuring safety and hygiene standards, maintaining and repairing equipment and tools, and ordering and storing supplies
- Collaborate with colleagues in a highly functioning Arts Department with a willingness to assist with special projects
- Meet school guidelines regarding grading, recordkeeping and use of the learning management system to post class information
