What is the role 

The primary role for the Systems Engineer is to provide technical support to clients including remedial maintenance support on infrastructure, LAN and WAN networks and implementation of new technologies. Also providing leadership to an allocated team, working with our education client, working closely with other members of the Service Delivery team to ensure client environments are supported and maintained to required standards and SLAs are met.

  • Providing leadership, coordination and support to the team of five direct reports 
  • Provide ongoing guidance, feedback and mentoring to team members, encouraging continuous improvement
  • Working with HR on the recruitment, onboarding and exit processes for team members 
  • Performing all leave approvals, ensuring adequate resourcing and management of leave balances for technical team
  • Providing remote and onsite support for client environments
  • Working directly with clients in terms of testing, diagnosing, repairing, configuring and upgrading hardware and associated IT equipment 
  • Acting as an escalation point and aiding more junior members of the team 
  • Responding to incidences and assigned problems to meet SLA requirements
  • Liaising with vendors if required
  • Ensuring equipment configuration, error logs and code levels are within set specifications
  • Developing and maintaining technical procedure and system documentation for the supported architectures
  • Proactively improving and automating technical procedures
  • Maintaining and developing broad, high level technical knowledge and skills across technologies deployed by New Era, through self-study and internal and external training courses
  • Documenting daily activity, through mandated time sheeting system, in an accurate and timely manner
  • Other related duties as required

 

Who we are looking for 

Successful candidates must possess the following: 

  • Technical Expertise:
  1. Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting – strong diagnostic and analytical skills for identifying and resolving system issues efficiently.
  2. Automation and Scripting – proficiency in scripting languages like PowerShell, Python, or Bash for automating routine tasks.
  3. Security – in-depth understanding of cybersecurity principles, including system hardening, vulnerability management, and incident response.
  4. Crisis Management – expertise in managing high-pressure scenarios, such as outages or critical system failures, while leading a team to resolution.
  5. Communication Skills – clear written and verbal communication for documentation and collaboration across technical and non-technical teams
  • Minimum 3–5 years in a systems engineering or related IT role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience) is preferred 
  • Certifications (preferred) such as: 
    • CompTIA Network+ or Security+
    • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
    • AWS Certified Solutions Architect
    • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
    • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) 
  • Experience with database technologies (e.g., SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL) is desirable.
  • Experience in leading and  motivating a team. 
  • Client, stakeholders management experience will also be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in systems design, deployment, and maintenance (e.g., Windows, macOS environments).
  • Advanced understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, and VPNs.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V, or Kubernetes).
  • Expertise in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
