Senior Director of Project Development, New York

New Leaf Energy is seeking a Senior Director of Project Development supporting our New York region. This is a management position that has direct responsibility for an existing team of Project Developers and Associate Project Developers.
Our preference is for this position to be based out of our Troy, NY office. However, we will consider candidates based in New York or out of another New Leaf office location. We value in-person collaboration and offer a hybrid work environment. Hybrid employees work in the office at least two out of every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and are free to work from the office or home on other days.
Position Summary
You will lead performance through a cross-functional group that includes representation from Engineering, Policy & Business Development, and Project Finance. You should have a broad skill set that makes you comfortable in a range of economic, technical, and structural contexts associated with complex project development, and will be an entrepreneurial leader who can organize ad hoc cross-functional teams and think flexibly and strategically. Direct experience with project development is a must.
Position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Generate and execute on a detailed, multi-year project development plan, directing collaboration and input from many New Leaf Energy employees;
- Build and manage a high-performing team to act as the core of our expansion in the assigned region for solar and storage projects in excess of 2 MW DC;
- Collaborate effectively with a range of New Leaf Energy departments, including others in project development, development engineering, policy and business development, and project finance;
- Develop go-to market strategies to meet or exceed annual project volume targets. Given the multi-year time scale for these projects, initial targets will focus on leading indicators of increasing development activity and growing pipeline value;
- Analyze the impact of changing regulatory environment and adjust strategy as necessary;
- Own and continuously improve sales processes and tools for your team;
- Analyze, forecast and report to senior leadership on project status, project revenue and project driven profit;
- Help your team close lease, PPA, and MIPA agreements.
Desired Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience with >2 MW AC solar and/or energy storage project development, and a successful track record in a complex, multi-disciplinary professional environment;
- 5+ years of experience as a people manager;
- Strong knowledge of electricity system market structure, rules and regulations, and economics, with some proficiency in the engineering and physics of the system;
- Demonstrated ability to manage and work effectively with cross-functional employee groups; we’re looking for people whose references will say you’re a great teammate;
- Strong understanding of core quantitative concepts of business and finance (IRR, NPV, etc.);
- MBA preferred.
Compensation
New Leaf Energy compensates all employees in three ways: market-competitive base salary, plus above-market variable compensation, plus an equity-like program such that all employees experience the benefits of ownership. We use a data-driven and transparent methodology to calibrate compensation that is externally competitive and internally equitable, guided by the New Leaf Energy compensation manual, which is available to all employees.
The base salary for this position is $155,000.Total compensation for this position, however, is primarily driven more by our generous project incentive plan, which compensates developers through a profit-sharing mechanism on successfully developed projects. The program is generous and industry-leading, and we’re glad to go into more detail in the interview process.
