Director of Editorial AI

Newsweek is seeking a full-time Director of Editorial AI to join our London bureau.
The successful candidate will enhance editorial workflows through the integration of AI and automation technologies, ensuring the newsroom operates efficiently while maintaining high standards of journalism. They will identify areas of coverage that would benefit from new tools and technologies.
They will have strong interpersonal skills, a proven track record of using AI and automation technologies professionally, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for fostering a high-performing editorial team.
They will be responsible for AI and automation implementation, leading the integration of AI tools and automation workflows to streamline editorial processes, enhancing productivity and content quality.
They will set and monitor performance goals for AI and automation projects, utilizing data analytics to assess effectiveness and drive improvements.
They will conduct training sessions for staff on new AI tools and automation systems, ensuring all team members are proficient and comfortable with the technology. They will also work closely with IT and Product teams to refine new processes and tools.
They will ensure that all content meets ethical journalism standards and aligns with Newsweek’s editorial objectives.
Working hours: This is a full-time role, working 5 days a week, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 6am-6pm depending on the needs of the company.
Place of Work: Our office is based in London but you will have the ability to work from home anywhere in the UK.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the integration of AI tools and automation workflows to streamline editorial processes, enhancing productivity and content quality.
- Set and monitor performance goals for the new processes and technology, utilizing data analytics to assess effectiveness and drive improvements.
- Conduct training sessions for staff on new AI tools and automation systems.
- Work closely with IT and Product teams to develop and refine editorial tools that support AI-driven content creation and management.
- Engage with vendors and internal software teams on new processes and products.
- Ensure that all content produced meets ethical journalism standards and aligns with Newsweek’s editorial objectives.
- Provide guidance and professional development opportunities for team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation to new technologies.
- Collaborate with other departments to align editorial goals with broader company strategies, ensuring cohesive operations across the organization.
- Support other Newsweek bureaus’ editorial operations where required.
- Any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Proven experience in editorial management, particularly in roles that involve technology integration and workflow optimization.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities, with a focus on fostering a high-performing editorial team.
- Familiarity with AI technologies such as ChatGPT, CoPilot or other large language models, content management systems (CMS), and analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Parse.ly, and Microsoft PowerBI.
- Familiarity with content tools such as Dataminr and Spike.
- Experience with Microsoft productivity suite and Teams.
- Experience with SEO tools such as Google Trends and NewzDash or similar.
- Ability to analyze performance data and make informed decisions based on insights.
