Newsweek is seeking a World Editor to lead international news and foreign affairs coverage from our UK-based digital newsroom, targeting a U.S. audience. This senior role combines day-to-day leadership of coverage with hands-on commissioning, editing, and publishing—ensuring our world news output is accurate, fast, original, and differentiated. They will shape coverage plans, assign and oversee original reporting, exclusives and interviews, run live blogs during major events, and work closely with editors to maintain Newsweek’s high standards.
The World Editor will be passionate about the intersection of emergent technology and editorial excellence, leveraging the potential of AI and automation tools while applying rigorous editorial judgment and media law awareness. They will be agile, learning and adapting to new tools, platforms, methods and techniques for news reporting in a fast paced digital newsroom.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in international news and foreign affairs coverage, proven success in a fast-paced digital newsroom, and a track record of line management and performance development. They will use audience insights to guide editorial decisions and help the team meet engagement and growth goals.
They will ensure that reporters are sourcing, pitching, researching, and developing content that contributes to the production of several original stories each day that enhances the Newsweek brand and distinguishes the publication from competitors.
They will act as line manager and provide formal feedback to staff on Standards and performance. They will monitor staff performance in line with Newsweek’s processes to achieve set targets and objectives.
The World Editor will be responsible for ensuring high-quality coverage that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism. They will perform any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business.
This is a full-time role working 5 days a week. Weekend team leadership will be required on a rotational basis. Working times on weekdays are typically 7am to 4pm and on weekends 8am to 5pm.
Key Responsibilities:
- Commission, produce, write, edit and publish several stories every day.
- Use AI tools to increase newsroom efficiency and optimize production of Newsweek’s editorial content.
- Respond rapidly to breaking news; lead and update live blogs during major global events.
- Monitor multiple sources for stories, emerging trends and conversations.
- Assign, oversee, and elevate original reporting, exclusives, and interviews that differentiate Newsweek’s coverage.
- Use audience data and analytics to shape coverage and hit engagement goals.
- Collaborate with the News Director and editors on coverage plans and projects.
- Lead the news team on weekdays and weekends when required.
- Line manage staff in accordance with Newsweek’s standards and production objectives.
- Ensure Newsweek delivers high-quality reporting that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism.
- Perform any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business.
Requirements:
- Extensive editing and reporting experience at a reputable publication, focused on international news/foreign affairs.
- Exceptional international news judgment across geopolitics, security, diplomacy, global culture, and emerging trends.
- Experience managing teams, including setting goals and conducting performance management.
- Ability to produce and edit at speed in a digital environment.
- Proficiency and willingness to work with AI tools (generative AI and automation) and integrate them into editorial workflows.
- Strong command of digital publishing tools, CMS, analytics platforms, and editing software.
- Solid understanding of media law and best practices for digital journalism.
- Excellent organization and planning skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
