Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Sales and Use Tax Specialist to join our Finance Operations Team. In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring compliance with US sales and use tax regulations, supporting audits, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to manage tax-related processes efficiently. You will leverage your expertise to provide accurate taxability determinations, manage filings, and drive process improvements through technology and automation. This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive professional with a passion for building efficient and accurate tax processes.
Job Responsibilities
- Apply knowledge of sales and use tax laws to various goods and services, including exemptions, managed services, SaaS, and marketplace facilitator rules.
- Coordinate sales and use tax filings and payments with internal stakeholders, ensuring tax rules are set up properly on the online sales platform, including Shopify and Stripe.
- Download and review system reports to support regular sales and use tax filings, including but not limited to U. S. A. and Canada.
- Conduct sales and use tax research to resolve issues or anomalies, collaborating with internal teams, third parties, and customers.
- Perform sales and use tax accruals, evaluate unreconciled balances, and assist with resolution.
- Communicate with Accounting Team on the proper accrual and treatment of sales taxes.
- Support sales and use tax audits by gathering documentation (e.g., general ledger, invoices, purchase orders) and responding to state notices and assessment inquiries.
- Manage business registrations for new locations and renewals of existing ones.
- Perform research and provide analysis on sales and use tax inquiries to minimize tax risk
- Assist with system implementations, upgrades, and process improvements to enhance compliance efficiency and accuracy.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in US sales and use tax, including managing tax audits.
- Experience researching tax laws and regulations and staying current with changes.
- Ability to work independently, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities with a strong sense of urgency.
- Passion for automation and building efficient, accurate tax processes.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- 7+ years of experience in US sales and use tax, particularly in the SaaS, gaming and computing hardware industries.
- CPA, Master’s in Accounting/Taxation, or CMI certification.
- Working knowledge of Vertex O Series, Oracle, Power BI, Alteryx, PinPoint, Avalara, Taxually, TTR, OneSource, Sabrix, or other transaction tax calculation systems.
- Experience with import tax and customs duties on international trade.
- Experience handling withholding taxes on royalties from foreign partners.
- Proven ability to manage and extract queries and reports from ERP systems.
