Spot Checker

United States Stadium

During the preseason and regular season, the NFL monitors clubs' activities by conducting random and unannounced checks of clubs' practices.  These "spot-checks" are the eyes and ears by which the League office ensures that teams abide by various rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

Preseason spot-checks monitor clubs' off-season conditioning programs and mini-camps.  These checks are generally scheduled during the months of May and June and spot-checkers are asked to conduct at least two checks during that time.  While conducting a preseason check, spot-checkers are asked to monitor such things as the duration of practice, the number of players present at practice, the specific drills being conducted, and the equipment being worn.

Regular season spot-checks usually occur on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday and spot-checkers are usually asked to conduct two to three spot checks during this time.  While conducting a regular season check, spot-checkers are asked to monitor such things as the number of players present at practice, and documenting and observing players on Reserve Lists to see what type of activities and interaction they have during practice.

After each spot-check, a report is completed and sent to the League office.
