Officiating Scout (Seasonal)
Overview / Objective
To ensure a continuous pool of qualified candidates for officiating, it is critical the league hires persons capable of scouting prospective officials who recognize the best candidates for consideration as NFL Game Officials. The Officiating Scout will make these recommendations based on his/her assessment of officiating mechanics, judgment, professional presence, communication, and game management. In addition, the Officiating Scout will develop relationships with the pipeline of officials and organization across the country to facilitate this process. This is a seasonal role that is employed for seven months of the year with a predetermined start & end date.
Responsibilities
- Have a complete understanding of the qualities (on and off the field) the NFL looks for in a game official, with special emphasis on consistency of mechanics, both physical and visual.
- Observe game officials on video and in person at games, scrimmages, clinics, NFL camps or Spring League professional games to observe officials directly to provide proper context on his/her evaluation of selected pipeline officials.
- Identify individual game officials’ performances to suggest areas of focus for further training and development.
- Develop and maintain accurate and comprehensive records of all scouted officials. Prepare and submit detailed evaluation reports to the NFL officiating department. Use video clips and other evidence to support evaluations and recommendations for the selected pipeline of officials.
- At the request of the NFL, attend NFL OTAs, mini-camps, and training camps to foster relationships with current NFL game officials and observe their performance to ensure consistent messaging as it pertains to officiating rules/issues/mechanics.
- Attend and scout college spring games; attend college officiating clinics.
- Forge relationships with college officiating coordinators and local high school associations.
- Attend annual officiating candidate interviews if requested.
- Attend NFL Officiating retreat to prepare for upcoming season.
- Have a thorough knowledge of NCAA and NFL rules and mechanics.
- Watch, study, and understand all training videos created for NFL game officials to better understand what is expected at this level.
- As requested, conduct, or participate in phone or virtual conferences and training opportunities for pipeline officials.
- Communicate regularly with Officiating Scouting Coordinator to discuss and review the performance of pipeline officials; ensure consistent messaging and evaluation criteria.
- Identify underperforming pipeline officials and help determine if a developmental plan to help them improve has merit.
- Support the mentorship program by matching up officials, checking on progress, developing materials.
- Evaluate and submit scouting reports on prospective college officials as requested by Officiating Scouting Coordinator.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum five years of on-field officiating or coaching experience, or extensive Division I college officiating or coaching experience.
- Superior management skills, a strong executive presence, and exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent teaching and training skills.
- Computer proficient: Virtual Learning, Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook), Internet, DVSport, XOS.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrates understanding of NFL officiating rules and game day football operations.
- Proven ability to build strong relationships and establish credibility quickly in key internal and external relationships.
- Extensive travel including weekends required.

Salary / Pay Range-This is a seasonal role that is employed for seven months of the year with a predetermined start & end date. The pay range reflected is the weekly rate.
